Mt. Kilimanjaro Marangu Route
5 days—Mount Kilimanjaro Climb Discover the Best Marangu Route

Safari summary
Marangu Route has been referred to as the 'Coca Cola' route, leading potential climbers to think it is an easy route to the summit. This is far from the truth, to be honest! It requires a minimum of 5 days to complete, which does not mean it is easier than any other route. The trail goes through lush rainforest, heath, and moorland to the alpine desert and ultimately to the Arctic zone at the peak and the same route down. This safari is a great chance for you who is up for a Kilimanjaro adventure!

Itinerary
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut.
Kilimanjaro
On the first morning, you will be transferred from the hotel to Marangu Gate (1,830 m), located in a scenic village surrounded by coffee and banana farms. After registration, begin the hike through lush rainforest to Mandara Hut (2,700 m). In the afternoon, visit Maundi Crater or relax in the forest. Enjoy birdlife and spot monkeys along the way. The walk to Mandara Hut takes about 3–5 hours.
Mandara Hut
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro
The hike begins with a steep forest climb, then opens into grassy moorland with clear views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Continue steadily through moorland with giant heather and groundsel to reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m.). Enjoy stunning sunrises and sunsets near Kibo’s glaciated dome, feeling truly above the clouds. Walking time from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut is 4–6 hours.
Horombo Hut
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Kilimanjaro
We climb very gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain changes to screed and there is a palpable sense of high-altitude wilderness. We usually reach Kibo Hut (4,700 m.) at the bottom of the crater wall by midday and the afternoon is free (to contemplate the summit ascent!!). The remainder of the day is spent resting and eating in preparation for the final climb before a very early night! [4-5 hours walking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut].
Kibo Hut
Summit then down to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro
We begin the ascent around 1 a.m. by torchlight to reach Gillman’s Point by sunrise. The climb is steep over loose volcanic scree, but with a steady pace, we reach Gillman’s (5,685 m.) in 5–6 hours to rest and enjoy the sunrise. Strong climbers can continue a 3-hour round trip along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.), passing glaciers near the summit. The descent back to Horombo Hut is faster. Total walking time: 11–15 hours.

Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate - Hotel
Kilimanjaro
After breakfast, we will start with a pleasant moorland walk to Mandara and then a lovely forest walks to the National Park gates. Your guide then takes you to your hotel, where you get a well-deserved rest. The greenness and lushness of the forest are quite a stunning contrast to the summit day, and it really makes you realize how varied the scenery on Kilimanjaro is. [5-6 hours walking]
