Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is the second largest game reserve in the world and forms roughly 10% of Botswana’s total land area! It protects a massive expanse of Kalahari woodland and pan systems which is home to a myriad of Kalahari species such as Oryx, Springbok, Kalahari black-maned Lions, Cheetahs and fantastic birding. Kalahari roughly translates to the ‘land of great thirst’- a name it lives up to, as for up to 9 months of the year there can be virtually no surface water available creating some truly harsh conditions.
There are however some man-made water holes in certain areas which create hotspots for wildlife viewing. The game-viewing is best at the end of Botswana’s rainy season (March-April) but the reserve can be visited all year round.
