Safari summary

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route is one of the most iconic trekking experiences in Africa. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it offers a gentler gradient, scenic trails, and comfortable hut accommodation — an appealing blend of challenge, culture, and safety.
Over six meaningful days, you journey through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the Arctic summit zone, all supported by professional guides and warm Tanzanian hospitality.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After an early breakfast, you’ll be picked up from your hotel in Moshi and driven to Marangu Gate for registration and a briefing.
Your trek begins through lush rainforest, with a gentle, steady climb to Mandara Hut at 2,700 m. After lunch at the hut, take a short acclimatization walk to Maundi Crater for views of the surrounding landscape. Dinner is served in the communal dining hall.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, the trail continues through the last stretch of rainforest before opening into heath and moorland. Views become wider and cooler as you approach higher elevations.
Arriving at Horombo Hut, enjoy lunch and settle in with views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Evenings here are peaceful, with early dinner and time for rest.

Altitude: 2,700 m → 3,720 m

Distance: ~12 km

Walking Time: 6–8 hours

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

This extra day is key for acclimatization and increases summit success.
After breakfast, you take a high-altitude acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks, climbing to around 4,000–4,400 m before descending back to Horombo for lunch.
The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and enjoying the quiet mountain atmosphere.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today you cross the stark and beautiful Saddle, a high-alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation grows sparse as the landscape becomes rugged and lunar-like.
The pace is slow to conserve energy for the summit. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.

Altitude: 3,720 m → 4,703 m

Distance: ~9 km

Walking Time: 5–6 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Horombo Hut

You’ll wake around midnight for a warm drink before beginning the steep, demanding ascent to Gilman’s Point. As dawn breaks, you’re rewarded with breathtaking sunrise views over Africa.
Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point on the continent.
After celebrating at the summit, descend to Kibo Hut for a hot lunch and rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay.
