Londorossi Gate– Mti Mkubwa Camp
Moshi – Londorossi Gate (2,100m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m) Drive from Moshi to Kilimanjaro’s western entrance, Londorossi Gate. Registration, weighing of luggage, and safety briefing. Begin trekking through untouched rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and lush vegetation. Gentle ascent to Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Camp for dinner and overnight. Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp
Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) Steeper climb out of the forest into the heath and moorland zone. Cross volcanic ridges with sweeping views of Shira Plateau. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp on expansive open terrain. Hiking Time: 5–6 hours Distance: ~8 km Zone: Moorland
Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp
Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) Easy-paced trek across the high-altitude plateau. Wide-angle views of Kibo Peak. Optional acclimatization hike in the afternoon. Hiking Time: 3–4 hours Distance: ~7 km Zone: Moorland
Shira 2– Barranco Camp
Shira 2 – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m) Important acclimatization day following “climb high, sleep low.” Trek toward the iconic Lava Tower, stopping for lunch at 4,630m. Descend into the lush Barranco Valley. Overnight below the impressive Breach Wall. Hiking Time: 6–8 hours Distance: ~10 km Zones: Alpine Desert → Moorland
Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m) Early ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, a fun but safe scramble. Traverse glacial valleys and ridges. Shorter hiking day ideal for rest and acclimatization. Hiking Time: 4–5 hours Distance: ~5 km Zone: Alpine Desert
Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m) Steady climb over barren, lunar-like terrain. Arrive at Barafu High Camp, perched above clouds. Early dinner and rest before summit night. Hiking Time: 3–4 hours Distance: ~4 km Zone: High Alpine Desert ⏰ Summit attempt begins around midnight.
Barafu Camp – Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m) Midnight departure via steep switchbacks to Stella Point (5,739m). Final push to Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa. Celebrate sunrise, glaciers, and panoramic views. Descend to Barafu for brunch, then continue to Mweka Camp. Total Hiking Time: 12–15 hours Distance: ~17–20 km Zones: Arctic → Alpine Desert → Moorland
Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
