Itinerary
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your Kilimanjaro climb begins at Machame Gate (1,800m). After registration, trek through a tropical rainforest filled with giant ferns, moss-covered trees, and the sounds of exotic birds. The trail gradually ascends, offering glimpses of the distant summit through the canopy. Arrive at Machame Camp by late afternoon, nestled in a clearing surrounded by forest mist. Highlight: Spotting black-and-white colobus monkeys in the forest.
Machame Gate to Machame Camp (2,835m)
Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750m)
Leave the forest behind as the path climbs steeply into the moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically — heather, volcanic rock, and rolling clouds dominate the landscape. You’ll traverse the scenic Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic areas, before reaching Shira Camp with wide views of Mount Meru in the distance. Highlight: Breathtaking panoramic views of Shira Ridge and Kibo Peak.
Shira Camp
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Today is all about acclimatization to Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower (3,950m). Trek up to Lava Tower (4,600m), a dramatic rock formation where you’ll have lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp for the night. The “climb high, sleep low” technique helps your body adjust to the altitude. Highlight: Witness the magnificent Western Breach and glaciers of Kibo.
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
The day begins with the exhilarating ascent of Barranco Wall, a rocky ridge that rewards climbers with sweeping views over the valley below. Continue across alpine desert terrain toward Barafu Camp, your base camp before the summit attempt. The air is thin, and the anticipation builds as you prepare for your climb to Uhuru Peak. Highlight: Sunset views over Mawenzi Peak, glowing red above the clouds.
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (4,670m)
Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Down to Mweka Camp Just after midnight, your summit push begins. Under a blanket of stars, ascend steadily to Stella Point (5,739m) and continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. The sunrise from the summit is beyond words — glaciers sparkle in golden light as clouds drift far below your feet. After celebrating this life-changing moment, descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for rest and celebration.
Mweka Camp
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m)
After breakfast, enjoy your final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your Kilimanjaro climbing certificate — a symbol of endurance and triumph.
