Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

Lake Nakuru

Arrive in Nairobi and meet your birding guide before heading into the scenic Rift Valley. Continue to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater haven for birdlife. After check-in and lunch at Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge, enjoy a boat ride to spot fish-eagles, pelicans, and herons. Later, take a guided walk on Crescent Island, where giraffes and antelopes roam, and colorful weavers, starlings, and open-country birds fill the lakeshore.

Overnight at Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge

Day 2: Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru

After an early breakfast, drive to Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya’s premier birding hotspots. The alkaline waters attract large flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and storks, while the surrounding acacia woodlands host bee-eaters, kingfishers, and colorful starlings. Raptors such as the African fish eagle and augur buzzard are common sightings. The park also shelters rhinos, giraffes, and buffaloes, making it a perfect mix of birdwatching and game viewing.

Overnight at Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge

Day 3: Lake Nakuru to Lake Baringo

This morning, journey further into the Rift Valley to Lake Baringo, one of Kenya’s richest birding destinations with over 450 recorded species. Afternoon boat excursions give you the chance to see African darters, goliath herons, and malachite kingfishers. The papyrus swamps host unique species like the papyrus gonolek and papyrus canary, while the cliffs attract raptors such as Verreaux’s eagle.

Overnight at Oserian Eco-Lodge.

Day 4: Lake Baringo to Aberdare

After breakfast, head into the cool central highlands of Kenya, reaching Aberdare National Park, famous for its misty forests and montane birdlife. Here you will encounter highland endemics such as the scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird, Hartlaub’s turaco, and mountain greenbul. The afternoon is spent birding around forest edges and waterholes near your lodge, with frequent sightings of bushbuck, giant forest hog, and forest raptors.

Overnight at The Ark Lodge

Day 5: Aberdare to Maasai Mara

After an early breakfast, depart the Aberdares and travel southwest into the rolling savannahs of the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve. Arrive in time for lunch at your lodge. In the afternoon, set out for your first birding and game drive across the plains. Look out for Secretary birds, kori bustards, lilac-breasted rollers, and the striking crowned crane. Game is abundant here, including lions, cheetahs, elephants, and giraffes, creating endless photographic opportunities.

Overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge

Day 6: Full Day in Maasai Mara

Spend the entire day in the Maasai Mara, a birdwatcher’s dream. Over 450 bird species have been recorded here, from grassland species such as pipits and larks to scavengers like vultures and bateleurs. Morning and afternoon game drives will reveal a wealth of wildlife alongside bird sightings, while the riverine forests are home to kingfishers, turacos, and hornbills. With luck, you may also spot raptors soaring overhead as predators stalk the plains.

Overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge

Day 7: Maasai Mara to Nairobi

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast with final birding around the lodge before departing for Nairobi. Along the drive, you may stop for additional birding opportunities in the highlands. Arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon, where you’ll be transferred to your hotel or the airport for your onward journey.
