The Umbwe Route is one of the shortest, steepest, and most direct trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Our 6 day journey begins in the lush rainforest of the southern slopes, where giant trees and thick undergrowth surround you. The sound of birds and monkeys fills the air as you hike under the green canopy. Soon, the forest gives way to moorland and heath, with giant heathers and unique plants like the giant lobelia and groundsels. The steep ridges of Umbwe Valley make this route strikingly beautiful.
As you ascend higher, the scenery becomes more dramatic. The route approaches Barranco Camp through scenic ridges and valleys. This section is breathtaking, as the towering cliffs of the Barranco Wall rise above you. Climbing this wall is not technical, but it is a highlight of the trek. From here, the path joins with the Machame and Lemosho routes, becoming a little busier, but also more sociable as climbers from different trails gather.
The upper slopes of Kilimanjaro are dominated by alpine desert and rocky scree, a stark but powerful landscape. You will experience long and steady hikes as you adjust to the thin air. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak begins at midnight, under a sky full of stars. It is cold, quiet, and magical as your headlamp lights the path. Step by step, you will make your way up to Stella Point and then along the crater rim until you finally stand at Uhuru Peak – the highest point in Africa, 5,895 meters above sea level.
Reaching the summit is both a physical and emotional achievement. The view of the vast African plains below, and the glaciers shining in the morning light, is unforgettable. After enjoying the moment, you’ll descend slowly back down the mountain through Mweka Gate, passing once again through the changing climate zones.
The Umbwe Route is steep, adventurous, and beautiful. It gives trekkers a quieter path at the start, dramatic views throughout, and the full Kilimanjaro experience in just six days.
