Safari summary
The Umbwe Route is one of the shortest, steepest, and most direct trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its quietness and dramatic landscapes, it offers a true sense of adventure for trekkers who want to take on a challenging yet rewarding journey. Because of its steep ascent, this route is recommended for experienced climbers or those who are confident with their physical fitness.
Our 6 day journey begins in the lush rainforest of the southern slopes, where giant trees and thick undergrowth surround you. The sound of birds and monkeys fills the air as you hike under the green canopy. Soon, the forest gives way to moorland and heath, with giant heathers and unique plants like the giant lobelia and groundsels. The steep ridges of Umbwe Valley make this route strikingly beautiful.
As you ascend higher, the scenery becomes more dramatic. The route approaches Barranco Camp through scenic ridges and valleys. This section is breathtaking, as the towering cliffs of the Barranco Wall rise above you. Climbing this wall is not technical, but it is a highlight of the trek. From here, the path joins with the Machame and Lemosho routes, becoming a little busier, but also more sociable as climbers from different trails gather.
The upper slopes of Kilimanjaro are dominated by alpine desert and rocky scree, a stark but powerful landscape. You will experience long and steady hikes as you adjust to the thin air. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak begins at midnight, under a sky full of stars. It is cold, quiet, and magical as your headlamp lights the path. Step by step, you will make your way up to Stella Point and then along the crater rim until you finally stand at Uhuru Peak – the highest point in Africa, 5,895 meters above sea level.
Reaching the summit is both a physical and emotional achievement. The view of the vast African plains below, and the glaciers shining in the morning light, is unforgettable. After enjoying the moment, you’ll descend slowly back down the mountain through Mweka Gate, passing once again through the changing climate zones.
The Umbwe Route is steep, adventurous, and beautiful. It gives trekkers a quieter path at the start, dramatic views throughout, and the full Kilimanjaro experience in just six days.

Itinerary
Moshi to Umbwe Gate
Your adventure begins in Moshi, where you will be picked up from your hotel after breakfast. From here, you will drive for about an hour and a half to reach Umbwe Gate at 1,800 meters. At the gate, your guides will register your climb, and you will meet the mountain crew. The trek starts immediately, leading you through a dense rainforest filled with towering trees, tangled vines, and the sounds of birds. After about 5–6 hours of hiking, you will reach Umbwe Camp at 2,940 meters.
Umbwe Camp
Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Today you will leave the forest behind and climb higher into heath and moorland. The trail becomes less steep, but it is still a demanding hike as you follow a narrow ridge that gradually opens up to wider views. Along the way, you will notice giant lobelias and other unique plants that thrive at high altitude. The hike leads you into the Barranco Valley, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and the famous Barranco Wall towering above and spend the night on Barranco camp.
Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you will face the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that requires a bit of scrambling. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the valley below. The trail then gently undulates across ridges and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley. After a short but steep climb, you will arrive at Karanga Camp, 4,050 meters, where you will spend the night. This is a shorter day, giving you time to rest and prepare for the days ahead.
Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today’s hike takes you from Karanga to Barafu Camp, 4,680 meters. The trail climbs steadily and passes through rocky, alpine desert terrain with little vegetation. You will arrive at Barafu in the early afternoon, giving you time to rest and prepare for the summit attempt. From this camp, you can see both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Dinner will be served early, and you will go to bed before sunset, as your summit push will start just after midnight.
Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
This is the most challenging day of your trek. You will wake up just after midnight for a hot drink and snacks before beginning the final push to the summit. After 6–7 hours, you will reach Stella Point at 5,739 meters. From here, it is another hour along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a rest and a meal and continue your descent to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters for a night.
Mweka Camp
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
On your final day, you will descend through the rainforest on an easy and scenic trail. The path is often wet and muddy, but it is a refreshing walk filled with bird calls and the chance to see colobus monkeys. After 3–4 hours, you will reach Mweka Gate, where you will sign out and receive your summit certificate. From here, you will be driven back to Moshi, where a hot shower and a comfortable bed await.
