Safari summary
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route over seven days is one of the most rewarding and scenic trekking experiences in Africa. Known as the “Whiskey Route” for its challenge and beauty, Machame is loved by climbers who enjoy varied landscapes, steady acclimatization, and breathtaking views all the way to the summit. Unlike the shorter versions of the trek, the 7-day Machame route gives you more time to adapt to the altitude, which increases your chance of successfully standing on Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa.
The 7 day journey begins with a trek through lush rainforest, alive with birds, monkeys, and rich greenery. Each day takes you through a new environment, from rolling moorlands with giant heathers to the dramatic alpine desert, where rocky paths lead closer to the glaciers of Kilimanjaro. You’ll spend nights in mountain tents under the African sky, sharing stories and meals prepared by your climbing team, while slowly adjusting to the mountain’s altitude.
The Machame Route is also known for its scenic ridges, valleys, and panoramic views. You’ll pass famous landmarks such as Shira Plateau, Barranco Wall, and Karanga Valley, each with its own charm and challenges. On summit night, you’ll begin your climb under a blanket of stars, slowly making your way to Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak, where the first light of dawn reveals sweeping views across the African plains and glaciers around the summit.
What makes this journey truly unique is not just reaching the top but also experiencing the rhythm of the mountain each day. Your guides and porters will support you throughout, ensuring your safety and comfort. Meals are warm and nourishing, helping you refuel after long trekking days. Campsites are set in remarkable locations, giving you moments of rest and reflection amid nature’s beauty.
The 7-day Machame Route is ideal for those who want to enjoy the climb at a steady pace, giving the body the best chance to adapt while also appreciating the diverse ecosystems and landscapes. This adventure is more than a climb, it is a journey of patience, resilience, and connection with the mountain. By the time you stand at Uhuru Peak, you’ll feel the reward of your effort and the joy of completing one of the world’s greatest trekking adventures.

Itinerary
Moshi to Machame Gate
Your journey begins in Moshi, where you’ll be picked up and driven to the Machame Gate. After meeting your guides and porters, you’ll register and begin your hike through lush rainforest. The trail is cool, green, and alive with birdsong and the chatter of monkeys. After 5–6 hours of gentle walking, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp (2,835m) for dinner and your first night under the mountain sky.
Machame Camp
Machame Camp to Shira Cave Camp
Today the trail climbs out of the rainforest into open moorland. You’ll see giant heathers, volcanic rock formations, and wide views of the plains below. The hike takes about 5–6 hours before reaching Shira Cave Camp (3,750m). Here, you’ll rest, enjoy dinner, and watch the sunset over the Shira Plateau.
Shira Cave Camp
Shira Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
This is an important day for acclimatization. You will climb steadily toward Lava Tower (4,600m), where you’ll pause for lunch. Though it’s higher, you won’t sleep here instead, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m). This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust. The day is about 7 hours of hiking, with stunning views of the Western Breach and the Barranco Wall.
Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Your morning begins with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, a natural rock formation that looks steep but is manageable and fun. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of the mountain and valleys below. After about 4–5 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Karanga Camp (4,035m). The afternoon is for resting, eating, and preparing for the summit days ahead.
Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today you climb higher to reach Barafu Camp (4,640m), your base camp before the summit push. The landscape is rocky and barren, with views stretching across the plains. You’ll have an early dinner and go to bed early, as tomorrow begins before midnight. The hike today takes about 4–5 hours.
Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
This is the toughest yet most unforgettable day. Around midnight, you’ll begin your climb under a sky full of stars. Slowly and steadily, you’ll reach Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim and then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Standing on the summit as the sun rises is a moment of pure joy. After photos and celebration, you’ll descend back to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,110m). The day can take 12–15 hours in total.
Mweka Camp
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Your final day is a gentle walk back down through the rainforest. The fresh green scenery feels comforting after the high, rocky trails. In about 3–4 hours, you’ll reach Mweka Gate, where you’ll sign out and receive your summit certificate. From here, you’ll drive back to Moshi for a hot shower, good food, and the satisfaction of completing one of the world’s great adventures.
