Tarangire National Park, located about 118 kilometers southwest of Arusha in northern Tanzania, is one of the country’s hidden safari gems. Covering roughly 2,850 square kilometers, it is best known for its massive herds of elephants, some numbering over 200 individuals, and its iconic baobab-dotted landscapes. The park is named after the Tarangire River, a vital water source that draws wildlife during the dry season, creating one of the highest concentrations of animals outside the Serengeti. Visitors can spot a wide range of species including lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, impala, and even rarer antelopes like the fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk. The Silale Swamp offers a lush refuge for wildlife, particularly in the dry months of June to October, making it the best time for game viewing, while the wet season from November to May transforms the park into a green, bird-rich landscape with fewer tourists.
