Safari summary
This 5-day private safari takes you to two amazing parks in Southern Tanzania: Mikumi National Park and Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve. These parks offer a perfect mix of open grasslands, rivers, forests, and rich wildlife, making this safari a great option for anyone who wants to explore nature and see animals up close. The journey starts in Dar es Salaam with a drive to Mikumi National Park. Mikumi is known for its wide, open plains and beautiful scenery. It’s one of the easiest parks to reach from the city and offers great chances to see animals like elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, lions, and more. Game drives here are exciting and relaxing, as the open landscapes make it easier to spot wildlife.
After enjoying Mikumi, you’ll head to Nyerere National Park, the largest protected area in Africa. This park is wilder and less crowded, offering a more remote safari experience. It has thick bush, many rivers and lakes, and is home to elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalos, giraffes, lions, and even the rare African wild dogs. One of the highlights here is the boat safari on the Rufiji River, where you can quietly watch animals along the riverbanks and see hippos and birds from the water.
This safari is ideal for travelers who want a mix of adventure and comfort in a short time. You’ll stay in lodges or tented camps, travel in a private safari vehicle, and be guided by experienced staff. Whether it’s your first safari or not, this trip offers a wonderful chance to see some of the best wildlife and natural beauty Tanzania has to offer.

Itinerary
Dar es Salaam to Mikumi
Mikumi
Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam in the morning. Begin your journey to Mikumi National Park, about 5–6 hours by road. Enjoy views of the Tanzanian countryside and local life along the way. You will arrive in Mikumi in time for lunch. After some rest, go for an afternoon game drive where you may spot giraffes, elephants, wildebeest, lions, zebras, and many types of antelope. Return to your lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.
Full Day in Mikumi
Mikumi
After an early breakfast, head out for a full day of game viewing in Mikumi. With open plains and good roads, Mikumi is excellent for spotting a variety of wildlife. Your guide will take you to different areas of the park to search for predators, large herbivores, and birds. Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue your afternoon safari before heading back to camp for dinner and your second overnight stay.
Drive to Nyerere National Park
Nyerere (Selous)
Today after breakfast, drive south toward Nyerere National Park,Tanzania’s largest and most remote protected area. The drive takes about 6–7 hours through rural villages and changing landscapes. Arrive at your camp or lodge in time to relax, freshen up, and enjoy dinner. You’ll sleep near the Rufiji River, surrounded by nature.
Game Drive & Boat Safari in Nyerere
Nyerere (Selous)
After breakfast, begin your day with a morning game drive in the park. Nyerere is home to elephants, lions, buffalos, wild dogs, giraffes, and many bird species. The environment here is wilder and more remote than Mikumi. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safari on the Rufiji River. This is a peaceful way to spot hippos, crocodiles, and river birds and to enjoy the beautiful river scenery. After the boat ride, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Return to Dar es Salaam
Start your final day with a short-guided walking safari (if available), led by a park ranger. This experience lets you learn about animal tracks, plants, and small creatures in the bush that are not seen during game drives. After breakfast, begin your return drive back to Dar es Salaam. You’ll arrive in the late afternoon and be dropped off at your hotel, marking the end of your safari adventure.
