Safari summary
The 5-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route offers an exciting and direct path to Africa’s highest peak. Popularly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route that provides hut accommodations, making it a comfortable and appealing choice for trekkers. This route is favored by adventurers seeking a shorter climb while still enjoying stunning scenery and the chance to stand on Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.
Your journey begins in Moshi, the base town for Kilimanjaro climbs. The route takes you through diverse landscapes—from lush rainforest filled with unique wildlife to moorlands, alpine desert, and the breathtaking icy summit. Each day brings new challenges and rewards, including the chance to acclimatize as you ascend gradually to higher elevations.
Highlights of this climb include exploring the rainforest ecosystem with its colobus monkeys and birdlife, trekking across the Shira Plateau, experiencing the alpine desert’s surreal landscapes, and finally the unforgettable push to the summit. The Marangu Route’s hut system offers shared dormitory-style shelters with bunk beds and basic amenities, providing a warmer and more social atmosphere compared to tented routes.
Although considered one of the easier routes, the rapid 5-day itinerary leaves less time for acclimatization, so climbers should be prepared for altitude challenges. Good fitness and determination are essential for success. With the support of professional guides, cooks, and porters, you will be encouraged and cared for every step of the way.
This adventure is ideal for those who want a shorter climb with more comfort while still experiencing the magic of Kilimanjaro. The reward is an unforgettable sunrise from Uhuru Peak, overlooking the vast plains of Tanzania—a true once-in-a-lifetime achievement.

You leave behind the moorland and enter the alpine desert zone, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain becomes more barren, with volcanic rocks and sparse vegetation. The hike is steady and can feel demanding due to altitude. Arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700m) for dinner and rest before the summit push.

You wake around midnight for the most challenging part of the trek. A slow, steady climb through scree and switchbacks brings you to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From here, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate briefly at the summit before descending to Kibo Hut for rest, and then onward to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for overnight. A long but unforgettable day.
