Safari summary
This 4-day safari takes you deep into the wild and less-visited southern part of Tanzania, combining the vast Selous National Park with the open plains of Mikumi National Park. Starting from the lively city of Dar es Salaam, you’ll embark on a scenic drive through rolling hills, small villages, and farmland. Along the way, you’ll see glimpses of everyday life—farmers tending their crops with traditional tools, children playing along dusty paths, and vibrant roadside markets selling fresh fruits and handmade crafts. This slower pace of travel offers a chance to connect with the real Tanzania, far from the busier northern parks, and prepares you for the wilderness ahead.
Once you arrive at Selous, your adventure begins with a relaxing boat cruise on the Rufiji River, one of East Africa’s longest rivers. Floating gently along the water, you’ll watch hippos emerging for air and slipping back underwater, while crocodiles sunbathe lazily on riverbanks. The birdlife is spectacular, with colorful species like the malachite kingfisher darting past, fish eagles circling overhead, and the rare African skimmer gliding low over the water’s surface. Keep your eyes peeled for elephants or giraffes coming to drink at the river’s edge—these moments are often quiet and magical, framed by the peaceful sounds of nature. The boat ride is especially beautiful at sunset, when the sky glows pink and orange over the water.
The following day is dedicated to a full-day game drive through Selous, a huge and varied reserve covering over 50,000 square kilometers. The park is a mix of dense miombo woodlands, open grasslands, wetlands, and riverine forests, creating diverse habitats that attract a wide range of animals. You’ll have chances to see large herds of elephants slowly moving through the trees, buffaloes grazing in the shade, and giraffes stretching to feed on acacia leaves. Lions often lounge under shady trees or patrol their territory, and if you’re lucky, you might spot the elusive African wild dog hunting in packs. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights about the animals’ behaviors and the ecology of the park, making every sighting even more meaningful.
On day three, you’ll set off on a scenic drive north to Mikumi National Park, passing through the dramatic Uluguru Mountains, which rise steeply on the horizon. You’ll also pass through Morogoro, a vibrant town with bustling markets and friendly locals, offering a contrast to the wilderness ahead. Mikumi is known for its open savannah landscapes and the vast Mkata Floodplain, which attracts large concentrations of wildlife. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy an afternoon game drive, where you can spot herds of zebras and wildebeests grazing alongside impalas and buffaloes. Lions are commonly seen resting in the shade or stalking prey, while giraffes and elephants roam freely. The park’s accessibility and open views make for easy and rewarding wildlife spotting, especially for those who enjoy photography or watching predator-prey interactions.
Your final morning begins early with a game drive when animals are most active—predators may be on the hunt, and herbivores are out feeding in the cool morning air. This is often the best time to witness thrilling wildlife behaviors, and the soft morning light makes for stunning photographs. After the drive, you’ll return to your lodge or camp for a hearty breakfast, soaking in the peaceful surroundings one last time. Then, you’ll travel back to Dar es Salaam, enjoying the changing scenery and reflecting on the incredible wildlife and landscapes you’ve experienced. You’ll arrive in the city by mid-afternoon, giving you time to relax or prepare for your onward journey.
Beyond the wildlife, this safari offers a genuine chance to connect with local Tanzanian culture. Along the way, you may visit small villages or markets, meet friendly locals, and learn about traditional lifestyles and crafts. The southern circuit is less touristy than the north, so encounters with communities here feel more personal and authentic. You might taste freshly made snacks, hear stories from village elders, or watch artisans at work, adding a rich cultural layer to your adventure.
Throughout the safari, you’ll travel in a comfortable, private 4x4 vehicle with a knowledgeable, English-speaking guide who is passionate about wildlife and conservation. Your accommodations are carefully selected lodges or tented camps that blend comfort with being close to nature—places where you can relax after a day on the road, enjoy good food, and fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush. All meals, park entry fees, and activities like game drives and boat cruises are included, so you can focus entirely on the experience. This trip is ideal for travelers looking for a true taste of Tanzania’s wild southern circuit, combining amazing wildlife, beautiful landscapes, and local culture in a relaxed, intimate setting.
