Safari summary
There are few experiences on Earth as powerful, intimate, and awe-inspiring as coming face to face with our closest relatives in their natural habitats. At Chimp Safaris, we offer travelers the rare opportunity to embark on unforgettable journeys deep into the heart of East Africa’s lush rainforests, where chimpanzees chatter through the canopy and mighty silverback gorillas reign among the misty mountains. Our gorilla and chimpanzee trekking adventures in Rwanda and Uganda are immersive, respectful, and responsibly curated to bring you closer to the wild without disturbing it.
The Gorilla Trekking Experience
In the shadowy, volcanic slopes of the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the dense jungles of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, gorilla trekking offers a soul-stirring encounter with one of the planet’s most endangered species—the mountain gorilla. Guided by expert trackers and park rangers, you’ll hike through thick forests and rugged terrain, following signs such as footprints, dung, and broken branches until you come upon a habituated gorilla family.
The moment of connection—when your eyes meet those of a silverback or a curious infant gorilla—is pure magic. You’re allowed to spend a full hour in their presence, watching their gentle interactions, playful behaviors, and remarkable social structures. This hour is tightly regulated to protect the gorillas and minimize human impact, making every moment count.
Chimpanzee Trekking Adventures
If gorillas are the forest kings, then chimpanzees are its lively, spirited storytellers. Trekking for chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda and Kibale Forest National Park in Uganda immerses you in the daily lives of these fascinating creatures, known for their intelligence, tool use, and close-knit social bonds. Unlike the more placid gorillas, chimps are constantly on the move—swinging through trees, vocalizing, grooming one another, or foraging for fruits and insects.
The experience is thrilling and fast-paced, as your guides help you track the calls echoing through the trees and follow fresh trails to catch up with the troop. In Kibale, often called the “Primate Capital of the World,” sightings are especially frequent. Meanwhile, Nyungwe offers a breathtaking biodiversity haven with chances to spot other primates, birds, and forest-dwelling creatures.
Cultural and Scenic Richness
Beyond the trek itself, Rwanda and Uganda offer layers of meaning and beauty to every journey. You'll meet warm, welcoming communities that live in harmony with the parks, many of whom are involved in conservation efforts. Cultural encounters—ranging from traditional dance performances to visits with local artisans or Batwa pygmy communities—add depth to the adventure.
The landscapes themselves are endlessly captivating: from Rwanda’s terraced hills and mist-covered volcanoes to Uganda’s crater lakes, tea plantations, and lush jungle trails. Each hike is a chance to soak in the serene power of nature and the pulse of East Africa’s raw, untamed beauty.
What to Expect on the Trek
