Transfer to Akagera National Park

Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, our driver-guide will warmly welcome you. Without delay, you will set off on a 3-hour drive eastward to Akagera National Park. Named after the Akagera River, which flows along its eastern boundary, the park features a network of lakes, with Lake Ihema being the largest. You will check into Akagera Transit Lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Game Drive and Afternoon Boat Ride

You will have an early morning game drive to spot nocturnal animals like leopards, hyenas, and striped jackals. Accompanied by your guide and ranger, you will explore the park’s plains, home to zebras, topis, and bushbucks. Afterward, you will enjoy a boat ride on Lake Ihema, where you can observe hippos, crocodiles, and an array of bird species. The lake’s surroundings provide opportunities to spot African fish eagles, African jacanas, and kingfishers.

Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you will depart from Akagera National Park and journey 216 km to Volcanoes National Park. This park, part of the Virunga mountain range, is renowned for its mountain gorillas. Upon arrival, you will check into Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge for relaxation and lunch. Later, you will explore the nearby crater lakes, perfect for scenic views, bird watching, and volcano photography.

Start the day with an early breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing by a park ranger. Equipped for the trek, you will hike the challenging slopes of the Volcanoes, a journey made worthwhile by the chance to observe mountain gorillas up close. Spend an hour with these gentle giants, capturing memorable moments (without flash photography). In the evening, visit the twin volcanic lakes of Burera and Ruhondo before returning to the Lodge for dinner and camp fire stories.

After breakfast, you will travel back to Kigali, a 2.5-hour drive. In Kigali, your city tour includes a visit to Mt. Kigali for panoramic views, a stroll through the local market, and a solemn visit to the Genocide Memorial Site. Your driver-guide will then drop you off at your hotel or the airport, marking the end of your memorable 5-day safari.
