Safari summary
The 7-day Kilimanjaro trek via the Umbwe Route is a demanding yet incredibly rewarding journey for experienced and adventurous hikers. Known for its steep, direct ascent and dramatic landscapes, the Umbwe Route offers a more remote and less crowded path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.
The adventure begins at Umbwe Gate, winding through lush rainforest and ascending sharply to Umbwe Cave Camp. As you gain altitude, the route continues through breathtaking alpine landscapes, with overnight stays at Barranco Camp, Karanga Camp, and Kosovo Camp. On Day 6, you'll make a pre-dawn push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point on the African continent, arriving in time for a stunning sunrise over the glaciers and plains below.
After celebrating your summit achievement, you’ll descend to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest, then continue the final descent to Mweka Gate on Day 7, where climbers receive official Kilimanjaro summit certificates.
Although physically challenging due to its steep and rocky terrain, the Umbwe Route rewards trekkers with panoramic views, striking ridgelines, and an unforgettable sense of accomplishment.
