Safari summary

This itinerary is designed for climbers with a good level of physical fitness who are looking for a classic Kilimanjaro experience with the added comfort of sleeping in huts each night. The Marangu Route offers stunning scenery, varying ecological zones, and a straightforward path to Uhuru Peak. While the extra acclimatization day (Day 4) is crucial for increasing summit success rates, the shorter overall duration demands a steady pace and mental fortitude. Success depends heavily on proper preparation, a positive attitude, and listening to your experienced guides.

Itinerary

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Kilimanjaro

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Moshi your climbing team will pick you up and transfer you to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Marangu (approx. 1-2 hours drive). Here, you'll complete park formalities, meet your porters, and receive a final briefing. Begin your trek through the lush montane forest.Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys in the trees. Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m/8,860ft). Settle into your hut, enjoy dinner, and rest.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, leave the forest and continue your ascent through moorland terrain. The vegetation becomes sparser, dominated by heather and grasses, with views opening up to the lower slopes of Kibo and Mawenzi (Kilimanjaro's other peaks). Afternoon: Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft). This camp offers spectacular views and is a bustling hub for climbers. Enjoy dinner and prepare for the next day.

Acclimatization Day

Kilimanjaro

This is a crucial acclimatization day. You'll take a recommended "acclimatization walk" to Mawenzi Ridge (around 4,400m/14,400ft) or Zebra Rocks. The principle is "climb high, sleep low" – you gain altitude during the day to help your body adapt, then return to Horombo Hut to sleep at a lower elevation. Afternoon: Return to Horombo Hut for lunch and relaxation. Use this time to rest, rehydrate, and prepare your gear for the challenging summit push ahead.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Kilimanjaro

The landscape dramatically changes as you leave the moorland and enter the "alpine desert" zone. The terrain becomes rockier and drier, with sparse vegetation. You'll pass "The Last Water Point" before continuing across the vast "Saddle," a high-altitude desert between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700m/15,420ft), a basic stone hut camp at the base of the Kibo crater wall You'll have an early dinner and then try to get as much sleep as possible before the midnight summit push.

Summit Attempt

Kilimanjaro

This is summit night! You'll wake up around midnight, have a light snack and hot tea, then begin the challenging ascent under the stars. The climb is steep, over loose scree and volcanic rock, to Gilman's Point (5,681m/18,640ft) on the crater rim.you'll continue along the crater rim for another 1-2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement and enjoy the incredible sunrise views. Begin the long descent back down to Kibo Hut.

: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Kilimanjaro

Morning: After a final breakfast on the mountain, begin your last descent through the moorland and then back into the lush forest. The walk is mostly downhill and generally quicker. Arrive back at Marangu Gate. Here, you'll receive your climbing certificates (green for Gilman's Point, gold for Uhuru Peak) and have a chance to say goodbye to your climbing team. Your vehicle will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, celebratory dinner, and well-deserved rest.
