Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

After a morning briefing and gear check in Moshi or Arusha, you’ll be driven to the Umbwe Gate. Begin your trek through the dense montane rainforest, ascending steeply on a narrow trail surrounded by giant fig trees and moss-covered vegetation. Reach Umbwe Cave Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight rest.

Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

Continue ascending through increasingly sparse vegetation into the moorland zone. The trail steepens and offers spectacular views of the Southern Icefields. Reach Barranco Camp, situated in a valley below the imposing Barranco Wall, with stunning views of Kibo Peak.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Begin with the challenging scramble up the Barranco Wall, a steep but rewarding section offering panoramic views. Continue through alpine desert terrain with valleys and ridges. Arrive at Karanga Camp in the afternoon, a perfect spot to acclimatize and rest before the summit attempt.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Start early with a steady climb to Barafu Camp. Rest briefly before beginning the midnight summit attempt.
