Safari summary
The 7-day Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. Known for its gradual ascent, fewer crowds, and drier conditions, it is an excellent option for those looking for a less congested and scenic climb. This 7-day itinerary allows for better acclimatization, increasing the chances of a successful summit compared to the 6-day version.
The trek begins at Rongai Gate (1,950m), leading through lush rainforest to Simba Camp (2,600m) on the first day. On day two, climbers continue through moorland to Second Cave (3,450m) before heading to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m). Day three involves a steeper ascent to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m), with breathtaking views of Mawenzi Peak. The fourth day is a crucial acclimatization day spent at Mawenzi Tarn, allowing trekkers to adjust to the altitude before continuing.
On day five, hikers cross the Saddle, a barren alpine desert, before reaching Kibo Hut (4,703m), the base for the summit attempt. The summit push begins at midnight on day six, with climbers ascending to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After a short celebration, trekkers descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m). The final day involves a long descent through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860m), where climbers receive their summit certificates.
The 7-day Rongai Route offers a well-paced itinerary with excellent acclimatization, making it a great alternative to the Marangu and Machame routes. The best months to climb are January–March and June–October, when weather conditions are most favorable. Though considered one of the easier routes, proper physical preparation and altitude awareness are still crucial for a successful and enjoyable trek.
