Safari summary

The Northern Circuit route is one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro, offering nearly 360 degrees of beautiful scenery including the quiet, rarely visited northern slopes. As the longest route on Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit allows for the best acclimatization time and the highest summit success rate, therefore this route is highly recommended.

The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the rainforest to Shira Ridge, before crossing the Shira Plateau. The route then heads north and circles clockwise from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp to School Hut, before summiting from the east.

The trail climbs out of the forest into the heath and moorland zone, revealing open views of Kibo Peak. The path crosses hills and valleys for 5–6 hours until reaching Shira 1 Camp (3,610m) on a wide plateau. Enjoy your first clear view of the mountain’s upper slopes and a relaxing evening at camp.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

A gentle 3–4 hour trek continues across the stunning Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest lava flows. Along the way, you’ll pass beautiful alpine plants and panoramic views. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) in time to rest and enjoy the views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding plains.

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

Overnight: Moir Hut

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

The trail continues around the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, offering unique perspectives and few other climbers in sight. Begin with a climb up a ridge, then descend slightly into the valley leading to Third Cave Camp (3,870m). The 5–6 hour trek continues through quiet, beautiful landscapes, with views of Mawenzi Peak growing larger. This peaceful camp provides an excellent final rest before heading towards summit base camp.

Overnight: Third Cave Camp

Third Cave Camp to School Hut

Today you’ll hike for 4–5 hours to School Hut (4,750m), your base camp for the summit attempt. The trail rises steadily, passing through alpine desert with sparse vegetation. Rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for your midnight summit push.

Overnight: School Hut
