Tarangire National Park – The Land of Giants
Located just 130 km from Arusha, Tarangire National Park is famous for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and an abundance of wildlife. It is one of the best places in Africa to observe elephants up close, as they roam freely in vast numbers. The park's landscapes shift between open plains, woodlands, and swamps, creating a diverse habitat for many species.
Wildlife Highlights in Tarangire:
Elephants – Home to one of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania.
Big Cats – Lions, leopards, and cheetahs can often be seen lurking in the grasslands.
The Tarangire River – A vital water source attracting zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and gazelles, especially during the dry season.
Rare Species – Look for the fringe-eared oryx, greater kudu, and the elusive African wild dogs.
Incredible Birdlife – Over 550 bird species, including the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-collared lovebird, and the ostrich, the world’s largest bird.

Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park offers a stunning contrast to the dry savannas of Tarangire. The park is known for its lush groundwater forests, diverse ecosystems, and abundant wildlife. The shallow alkaline Lake Manyara, which covers a large portion of the park, attracts thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds, creating a stunning pink-hued landscape.
