Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp

Elevation (ft): 7,800ft to 9,500ft, Distance: 6 km, Hiking Time: 4 hours, Habitat: Rain Forest It takes about 4 hours to depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate, where you will be required to complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trailhead, we take lunch, and then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site.

Forest Camp to Shira Camp II

Elevation (ft): 9,500ft to 12,500ft, Distance: 18 km, Hiking Time: 10 hours, Habitat: Moorland Continuing on the trail, we exit the forest into a savannah of tall grasses and heather, ascending through lush hills and streams. After reaching Shira Ridge, we descend to Shira I Camp, enjoying stunning views of Kibo Peak. The trek then leads gently east across the Shira Plateau to Shira II Camp, set in moorland meadows by a stream.

Shira Camp II to Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, we trek east up a ridge, passing the junction to Kibo Peak and then southeast toward the Lava Tower, or "Shark's Tooth." Afterward, we arrive at a second junction leading to Arrow Glacier before descending to Barranco Hut for rest and dinner. While we end the day at the same elevation, this day is essential for acclimatization, helping prepare our bodies for the summit at Uhuru Peak. Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation (ft): 13,000ft to 15,000ft, Distance: 11km, Hiking Time: 9 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert We leave Barranco early after breakfast and ascend the steep Barranco Wall to reach the Karanga Valley campsite. After departing from Karanga, we connect with the Mweka Trail and continue to Barafu Hut. Here, we complete the South Circuit, enjoying stunning views of the summit and the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. We camp, rest, have dinner, and prepare for the upcoming summit day.

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

From Barafu Camp, trekkers start early to ascend steeply to Uhuru Peak, reaching Stella Point for sunrise views before summiting at 19,341 ft. After a brief stay at the peak, they descend back to Barafu to collect their gear and continue down to Mweka Hut. The descent, while less strenuous, requires caution and showcases changing landscapes. Finally, trekkers can relax and celebrate their achievement with dinner and rest at Mweka Hut. Here you will be rewarded with Mount Kilimanjaro summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the Mweka gate, a vehicle will be there to drive you back to your respective beautiful hotel in Moshi/Arusha.
