Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp
Kilimanjaro
• Elevation Gain: 7,800 ft to 9,500 ft • Distance: 6 km • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours • Climate Zone: Rainforest Hikers depart from Moshi and drive to Londorossi Gate (about 4 hours) to complete park registration. Afterward, an additional one-hour drive brings you to the Lemosho trailhead. Here, lunch is served before beginning the trek through pristine rainforest to Forest Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, for dinner and overnight.

Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1

• Elevation Gain: 9,500 ft to 11,500 ft • Distance: 8 km • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours • Climate Zone: Moorland After breakfast, hikers leave the forest and enter the moorland zone, characterized by tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock adorned with lichens. The trail ascends through rolling hills and crosses streams, eventually reaching the Shira Ridge before descending slightly to Shira Camp 1. Enjoy stunning views of Kibo Peak across the plateau.

Shira Camp 1 to Moir Camp

The trail passes through scenic meadows and streams, leading to Shira Camp 2. For additional acclimatization, you may continue to Moir Camp, a quieter campsite located at the base of the Lent Hills.

This is a critical day for acclimatization as you spend time at higher altitudes before descending to Barranco Camp at 13,000 ft. The descent helps your body adapt, even though you end the day at roughly the same elevation as you started.
