Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Kilimanjaro

Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate with registration formalities before setting off through the lush rainforest. The trail ascends gradually, providing an excellent opportunity to acclimatize while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna. Look out for black-and-white Colobus monkeys swinging in the trees. After 4-5 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, located at an altitude of 2,700m (8,858 ft). Here, you’ll rest and prepare for the next day’s journey.

The initial ascent to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim is the most challenging part due to steep, rocky terrain and thin air. From there, it’s a gradual climb to Uhuru Peak, where you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Horombo Hut, covering 22 km (13.5 miles) in 10-15 hours total
