Day 1: Moshi to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After a transfer to the Marangu Gate, you'll register and start your trek through lush rainforests. Arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation: 2,720m to 3,720m
The trail transitions to moorlands with stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Overnight at Horombo Hut.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,703m
Trek through alpine deserts and reach Kibo Hut. Rest early in preparation for the summit attempt.
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Distance: 20 km (12.5 miles)
Time: 10-14 hours
Elevation: 4,703m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,720m
Summit day begins at midnight, climbing steeply to Gillman’s Point and continuing to Uhuru Peak. After enjoying the sunrise, descend to Horombo Hut for rest.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi
Distance: 20 km (12.5 miles)
Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation: 3,720m to 1,970m
A final descent through lush forests leads you back to the gate. Celebrate your achievement with a transfer back to Moshi.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate with registration formalities before setting off through the lush rainforest. The trail ascends gradually, providing an excellent opportunity to acclimatize while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna. Look out for black-and-white Colobus monkeys swinging in the trees. After 4-5 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, located at an altitude of 2,700m (8,858 ft). Here, you’ll rest and prepare for the next day’s journey.

The trail from Mandara Hut transitions from rainforest to moorland, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As you gain elevation, you’ll spot unique vegetation, such as giant lobelias and groundsels. This segment covers 12 km (7.5 miles) and typically takes 6-8 hours to complete. Upon reaching Horombo Hut at 3,720m (12,205 ft), you can relax and enjoy the breathtaking sights of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks

Day three is a trek through alpine desert terrain as you head toward Kibo Hut. The trail crosses the Saddle, a vast and barren expanse between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This section spans 10 km (6 miles) and takes 6-8 hours to traverse. At Kibo Hut, located at 4,703m (15,430 ft), climbers rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. This is a critical day for acclimatization and mental preparation.

The summit day begins at midnight with a strenuous climb up to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m (19,341 ft). The initial ascent to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim is the most challenging part due to steep, rocky terrain and thin air. From there, it’s a gradual climb to Uhuru Peak, where you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Horombo Hut, covering 22 km (13.5 miles) in 10-15 hours total
