Safari summary

The Umbwe Route is a hidden gem among Kilimanjaro’s trails, offering a more secluded and adventurous ascent. Known for its steep initial climb, the route may seem challenging at first, but it remains accessible to many hikers, especially those seeking a less crowded experience. Starting on the southern flank of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Umbwe Route merges with the Lemosho and Machame routes by the third day, just before the iconic Barranco Wall.

One of the standout features of the Umbwe Route is the solitude it provides during the first two days, where you’ll rarely encounter other trekkers. This route is available in both 6 and 7-day itineraries, with the 7-day option being ideal for those without prior acclimatization. As you journey along this route, you’ll be treated to some of Kilimanjaro’s most breathtaking scenery, traversing diverse climatic zones and encountering unique flora and fauna along the way. The Umbwe Route offers an unforgettable and visually spectacular adventure on Africa’s highest peak.

Weru Weru River Lodge

Trekking from Umbwe Gate-Umbwe Camp

Kilimanjaro

In the morning, your guide and support crew will meet you at the hotel for final introductions and an equipment check before driving to the Umbwe Gate (1,800 m / 5,904 ft), the starting point of your Kilimanjaro adventure. After finalizing permits and registration, you’ll begin your ascent through the rainforest, heading towards Umbwe Camp (2,850 m / 9,348 ft). Expect a significant altitude gain, so maintaining a steady pace is key. Your camp will be set up by the time you arrive.

Umbwe Camp

Trekking from Umbwe-Barranco Camp

Kilimanjaro

After an early breakfast, the trek continues through changing landscapes as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. If the skies are clear, you’ll get your first glimpse of the Meru Volcano. By lunchtime, you’ll reach Barranco Camp (3,900 m / 12,792 ft), located within a large volcanic crater. After lunch, the rest of the day is yours to relax and acclimatize.

Barranco Camp

Trekking from Barranco-Karanga Camp

Kilimanjaro

This day begins with an early start to conquer the famous Barranco Wall. The climb is not overly technical, but we recommend setting out early to avoid any bottlenecks. After reaching the top, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Kibo volcano. The journey to Karanga Camp involves a series of ascents and descents, with our expert guides helping you maintain a comfortable pace. Upon arrival, you'll have lunch and then an acclimatization hike to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Karanga Camp

Trekking from Karanga-Barafu Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, you’ll set out for Barafu Camp (4,673 m / 15,327 ft), the base for your summit attempt. The camp will be set up by the time you arrive, allowing you to rest and prepare for the final ascent. In the afternoon, you’ll take an acclimatization hike towards Kosovo Camp (4,870 m / 15,974 ft), then return to Barafu for dinner and an early night’s sleep.

Barafu Camp

Summit & Descent to Millennium Camp

Kilimanjaro

The summit push begins around midnight. With your guide by your side, you’ll trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 ft), the highest point in Africa. While the climb isn’t technically difficult, the altitude makes it challenging. Once you’ve celebrated at the summit, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, and then continue down to Millennium Camp (3,950 m / 12,956 ft). Note: Descent is where most accidents occur, so take care to avoid slips or injuries.

Millennium Camp

Descent to Mweka Gate

Kilimanjaro

After a good night’s sleep, you’ll have breakfast and then set out on the final leg of your journey to Mweka Gate (1,640 m / 5,379 ft). Here, you’ll receive your certificates of achievement before being transferred back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
