Arrival in Marangu

The first day of the climb involves a relatively easy hike through the rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and mostly uphill, with occasional flat sections. It takes around 4-6 hours to reach Mandara Hut, which is situated at an altitude of 2,700 meters (8,858 feet). The hut provides basic accommodation facilities such as bunk beds and communal dining areas.

The scenery becomes rocky and rough as you leave Kibo, with bizarre alpine plants and massive groundsels. Early morning start, climbing in darkness up frozen scree slopes with torchlight. After 2 hours, reach Hans Meyer’s Cave. The hardest stretch follows, reaching Joanna’s Notch on the crater rim in 3 hours. Scramble to Gillman’s Point (5,685m) for sunrise over Mawenzi. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,896m) if energy allows. Descent retraces to Horombo Hut (approx. 3 hours). Overnight at Horombo Hut with meals provided. • Elevation -3,700 m to 1,700 m • Distance covered- 22kms(12-1515 hours)
