Machame Gate -Machame Camp

Hikers begin their journey at Machame Gate, located at the edge of Kilimanjaro National Park. After registration formalities and a briefing from their guide, they embark on a 6-hour trek through the lush Chomonjero Forest. The trail winds upwards through various vegetation zones, including coffee plantations and cloud forests. The first camp is situated near a stream with stunning views of Mount Meru.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

On day two7 days trek , hikers leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The trail passes through several small streams before reaching Shira Ridge. From here, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak. The camp is located in a grassy area near Shira River.

This day involves a steep ascent towards Lava Tower (4630 m), an extinct volcanic cone that marks the boundary between the Shira Plateau and the southern circuit. Hikers then descend to Barranco Valley (3950 m), passing through unique Senecio trees along the way. The campsite is situated near a waterfall with impressive views of Kibo Peak and the Great Barranco Wall.

On day five, hikers continue their ascent towards Barafu Campsite located near Stella Point on Kibo’s crater rim. This day involves steep climbs over Rongai Third Cave (4100 m) and Mweka Hut (3100 m). Hikers may experience altitude sickness during this stage but are encouraged to rest early for an early summit attempt tomorrow.

The final day of group begins around midnight when hikers summit attempt via Uhuru Peak, which is Africa’s highest point at 5895 meters above sea level. After several hours of climbing steep ice-covered sections using crampons and ropes, hikers reach Uhuru Peak just before sunrise for views of sunrise over Africa’s vast landscape below. After taking photos and celebrating their achievement, hikers descend back down to Mweka Hut for rest and recovery before continuing their descent on Day Seven.
