Arrival Nairobi - Samburu

On arrival at Nairobi Airport, meet and greet and then drive to Samburu National Reserve to arrive in time for lunch at Samburu. The park is famous for the Samburu semi nomadic tribesmen, spectacular scenery and wildlife not found in the South (Samburu Five): Reticulated Giraffe, the rare Grevy’s Zebra with its large furry ears, the rare long necked Gerenuk Antelope standing on its hind legs to feed and Somali Ostriches with their distinctive blue legs and the Beisa Oryx.

Morning and afternoon game drives in this dry semi-arid park with its striking background view of the Mathew's Range. You may see Elephants, Cheetah, Leopard, Eland, Oryx, Impala, Dik Dik, Waterbuck and a variety of birds. This lava plain includes a varied landscape of red dirt, thorn scrub, broken volcanic rock, dried riverbeds, steep hills and rocky outcroppings. Following the river’s curves, a forest of Doum Palms, Acacia and tamarind is a magical contrast of cool green.

After breakfast depart for Ngare Ndare Forest Trust, we will set out on a 3.5 km hike to the famous waterfalls. The forest is home to 7 waterfalls. Take a plunge in the natural azure blue pools The grandeur of the waterfalls will leave you speechless. We take a short break to and hike back to the canopy. We will then go for the the canopy walk. It is 10 meters high and 450 meters long, being the longest and highest canopy walk in East Africa.

The drive introduces you to a large selection of different animals which include the beautifully marked Reticulated Giraffes, Buffaloes, Oryx and a lot of plains game. Predators include Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs and Wild Dogs. Visit the Chimpanzees, in the 110000 acre Sweetwaters Sanctuary. This Sanctuary is home to 39 orphaned Chimps, age varying from 2-15 years, most of which came from Jane Goodall Institute in Burundi. Chimpanzees share 98.6% of their genetic DNA with humans.

After an early breakfast, depart for Naivasha with an optional stop at Thompson’s Falls, a beautiful waterfall at the Ewaso Nyiro River which is 81 meters (265 feet) high at a small fee at your own cost. Arrive in time for lunch at the Hotel CityMax. After lunch, proceed on an afternoon game drive in the park fame for its abundance of birdlife including Flamingoes, black and white Rhinos and scenic landscape. You return to Lake Nakuru Lodge late in the evening.

After breakfast, drive through the Great Rift Valley, the dramatic landscape and the plains inhabited by the Maasai pastoralists and across the ‘bread basket’ of Kenya covered with acres of wheat and barley. At 4pm proceed for an evening game viewing drive in search of black manned Lions, Elephants, Leopards, Cheetahs, Buffalos and other plains game. The sighting of Rhino and Leopard cannot be guaranteed and luck is a necessary factor as they are sparsely numbered, very shy and elusive.

The famous Mara is renowned for its great herds of plains game, black manned Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs. It also has numerous Elephants and virtually every type of wildlife to be found in Kenya. Antelopes, Wildebeests, Zebras and Maasai Giraffes can be seen as well as scavengers like Hyenas and Vultures. Bird life is also prolific with over 450 species having been recorded.

Full day spent game viewing across the rich, tree studded grassland and rolling hills. This reserve is the most visited Park in Kenya and the best for game as it has an extensive road and track network, which allows excellent photography and close viewing opportunities. Visit a Maasai village to see their nomadic lifestyle. (At an extra fee payable directly to the Maasai villagers – The Maasai are famous for their bravery, as they have co-existed with the animals over the years.)

After breakfast leave for Naivasha which will be reached by lunchtime. In the afternoon do a boat ride at an extra cost to visit Crescent Island. Lake Naivasha is home to an incredible variety of bird species. Over 400 species have been recorded here. Dinner and overnight will be at the campsite.

Hell's Gate National Park - Nairobi
After breakfast we visit Hell's Gate Park for a 3-4hr hike across flat terrain to the spectacular gorge. You can opt to cycle in the park at an extra cost of US$10. Hell's Gate is a small, beautiful park where exploration on foot is permitted. We'll have close encounters with Giraffes, Gazelles, Impalas, Zebras, Elands and Hartebeests among others. Finally we explore the volcanic forms in the gorges before leaving for Nairobi arriving in the late afternoon.
