Kilimanjaro Budget 5-Day Climb
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, can be a challenging but rewarding experience. While there are several routes to choose from, the Marangu Route is often considered the budget option due to its relatively lower cost compared to other routes. The Marangu Route is also the only route that offers hut accommodations, which can help reduce the overall cost of the climb.
The cost of a budget 5-day climb on the Marangu Route typically ranges from $1,200 to $1,500 per person. This includes accommodations, meals, park fees, guide and porter services, and safety equipment. However, it’s important to note that additional expenses such as tips for guides and porters (expected but not mandatory), personal gear rental, and travel insurance are not included in this price range. It’s recommended to book your climb with a reputable tour operator that prioritizes safety and environmental sustainability practices.

Kilimanjaro
Marangu Gate (1,860m/6,100ft) to Mandara Hut (2,700m/8,858ft) After breakfast, you will be driven to the Marangu Gate where you will register and begin your hike. The first day of hiking is relatively easy and takes you through lush forest to Mandara Hut. You will pass through a thick rainforest with a lot of birdlife and some wildlife. The trail is wide and well-maintained. You will reach Mandara Hut in the late afternoon and have time to rest before dinner.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro
Mandara Hut (2,700m/8,858ft) to Horombo Hut (3,700m/12,136ft) After breakfast, you will continue your ascent through the alpine meadows and moorland to Horombo Hut. The landscape becomes more barren as you ascend, and you will notice the vegetation becoming sparse. You will reach Horombo Hut in the early afternoon and have time to rest before dinner. This day’s hike is longer than the first day but still relatively easy.
Horombo Hut
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Kilimanjaro
After breakfast, you will continue your ascent to Kibo Hut. This part of the hike is steeper and more challenging than the previous days. You will pass through a desolate landscape with little vegetation. The last water stop is at Horombo Hut, so make sure you fill up your water bottles before continuing on to Kibo Hut. You will reach Kibo Hut in the late afternoon and have an early dinner before retiring for a few hours of rest before your summit attempt.

Kilimanjaro
You will wake up around midnight for your summit attempt. This is the most challenging part of the hike as you will be hiking in the dark with cold temperatures. You will ascend through scree and rocky terrain until you reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From here, it is a short but steep hike to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After taking in the views and celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.
