Safari summary
Trekkers can enjoy an amazing route to the Shira Plateau on this unspoiled and remote path, which receives very little traffic. It can be used as a substitute for climbing the Western Breach path, or it can be easily connected to the Kibo South Circuit, which leads to the easier route up the Barafu. There's usually nothing to see on the first day of the trip, and the party doesn't usually see armed rangers. The typical itinerary involves climbing the mountain for seven days, with the option to extend it to eight days if you stay overnight in Karanga Valley.

Arrival
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a representative from Zuriafrica Safaris will greet you and facilitate your transfer to the hotel at the specified rate. The hotel provides essential amenities for a comfortable stay, including cozy rooms, hot water, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. Later in the evening, our managers will conduct a briefing to ensure your preparedness for the upcoming climb.
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
Morning briefing at your hotel by Zuriafrica Safaris, then a 3-4hr drive to Kilimanjaro's Londorossi Gate. Complete permit formalities, start trek to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780m). Carry rain gear for the dense tropical forest. The crew readies camp, serves lunch, and leads an acclimatization hike to Shira 1 Camp. Return to Mti Mkubwa for a hot dinner. This strategic start ensures a gradual ascent and offers a glimpse of Kilimanjaro's diverse terrain, making your climb comfortable and unforgettable.
Mti Mkubwa Camp
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Rise early for a hearty breakfast and begin a gradual ascent to 3,500 meters, revealing stunning views of Shira Plateau and Kibo Volcano. The 5-6 hour trek to Shira 1 (3,610m) ensures a gentle acclimatization process. Upon arrival, the specialist team serves a hot lunch, providing time to rest in your tent amidst the breathtaking scenery. This day with Zuriafrica Safaris sets the tone for a well-paced journey toward Kilimanjaro Crater Camp.
Shira Camp One
Shira Camp 1 To Shira Camp 2
Today, your group leaves Shira 1 Camp (3,610m/11,843f) for a light trek to the second high-altitude camp, Shira 2 Camp (3,850m/12,631f). The journey offers spectacular views of Africa and Kilimanjaro's unique endemic plants. Shira 2 Camp provides the optimal vantage point to see Mount Meru, Africa's fifth-highest summit, weather permitting. This day's trek with Zuriafrica Safaris combines ease with breathtaking scenery, setting the stage for further Kilimanjaro exploration.
Shira Camp Two
Shira 2 Camp to The Lava Tower
Following breakfast, depart Shira 2 Camp (3,810m/12,500f) for a trek to Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190f). This route is more challenging, featuring inclines and descents, making it physically demanding but crucial for acclimatization. Lunch atop Lava Tower provides 1-2 hours to rest after the challenging morning. Post-lunch, trek higher and gradually descend to Moir Hut, situated on the path to the northern part of Kilimanjaro, strategic acclimatization, ensuring a balanced and rewarding ascent.
Moir Hut
Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
On this day, you will have a long but relatively easy trek. Initially, you will have a steep (although short) climb to depart Moir Valley, and then approach the northern slope of Kilimanjaro. While there will be more ups and downs on this trek, there are no steep altitude gains. This route passes close to the border with Kenya, so you will be treated to amazing views of the Tsavo and Amboseli Valleys.
Buffalo Camp
Buffalo Camp to 3rd Cave Camp
You will finish trekking up the northern slope of Kilimanjaro and stop for the night in 3rd Cave Camp, where the route will meet up with the traditional Rongai route. On this day the trekking will be shorter, and by this time your body should already have become completely acclimated to an altitude of 4,000 meters / 13123 feet, which will contribute to your increased comfort and overall well-being.
3rd Cave Camp
3rd cave Camp to School Hut
Today's trek takes you to the School Hut Summit Camp (4,800m/15,748f). The trek itself is not overly challenging, so it's advisable to maintain a suitable pace to preserve energy for the following day. Upon reaching the camp, prioritize a good night's sleep, avoid strenuous activities, and stay well-hydrated, as tomorrow your group will embark on a trek into the crater.
School Hut Summit Camp
School Hut to Crater Camp
This day proves one of the toughest on your journey. A hot breakfast awaits upon waking, fueling you for the demanding ascent to the crater rim. The sight of ancient glaciers and snow upon arrival is awe-inspiring. Optionally, a 90-minute climb to the Ash Pit awaits. The campsite is cold, with a chance of snow. Spending the night in the crater is an exclusive feat. Hot meals revive you, but minimizing physical activity is crucial in these challenging conditions.
Crater Camp
Crater Camp to Uhuru Millenium Camp
Wake early at 5:30 am, enjoying a hearty breakfast before dawn. Expect possible snow, so dress in warm layers. While technically not challenging, the high altitude intensifies exertion. Climbing in pairs with a guide monitoring stamina, you'll reach Uhuru Peak within two hours. Witness an incredible sunrise from Africa's highest point. Due to cold and fatigue, limit your stay at the summit. Descend to Millenium Camp through Barafu after this remarkable ascent.
Millenium Camp
Mellennium Camp to Mweka Gate
The camp lies in a tropical rainforest. Waking up, you'll sense relief from the decreased altitude and the satisfaction of summiting. After a warm breakfast, journey to the park's exit: Mweka Gate (1,640m/5,380f). Upon descent, the group will celebrate your achievement, allowing you to share your climb experience in the guestbook. Concluding at our office, we'll present commemorative certificates and arrange your transfer back to the hotel.
