The Marangu route it is also known as “Coca-Cola” route, Marangu approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast of the Mountain, it is the oldest established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest route on the mountain.
The minimum days required for this route is 5 days, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time is a bit low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended, maximizing the chance of reaching to the summit. Marangu is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations.
Climbing Kilimanjaro offers Marangu as 5 or 6 day private or group climb. The 5 day variation does not have an acclimatization day on day three at Horombo Hut but the 6 day offers an acclimatization day at Horombo hut.
The Marangu route takes its start at the south-east of Mountain Kilimanjaro. The Kilimanjaro "Coca-Cola" route features a well-trodden trail running through all the climate zones from tropical rainforest to eternal ice, and will also will treat you to scenic African landscapes. Being the most popular and the least expensive, the route may be crowded in July-September and December - March. A 6-day option is strongly recommended over the 5-day one for better acclimatization. The 5-day Kilimanjaro climbing tour to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro follows the Marangu route, but energetic, fast, and experienced climbers can also take the Machame route, the Rongai route, or the Umbwe route.
The main difference between the 5-day and 6-day Kilimanjaro climbs via the Marangu Route lies in the duration of the trek. The 5-day option is a more condensed and faster ascent, designed for those seeking a challenging yet expedited climb to the summit with no acclimatization day at Horombo hut. On the other hand, the 6-day option offers a more leisurely pace, allowing for better acclimatization at Horombo hut and an extended experience with additional rest days. The choice between the two depends on your preference for a quicker, more intense climb or a slightly longer, more immersive journey to the top of Kilimanjaro.
Why a 6-day Marangu route is better than a 5-day?
For climbers on a 6-day itinerary, the 3rd day is spent at Horombo Hut acclimatizing to the altitude, usually with an acclimatization hike. Those on the 5-day trek will continue up to Kibo Camp (4,700 meters) and again an additional 1000 meters in altitude. Here you pass the last water point, (4,100 meters) and the crew will top-up the water reservoirs for use at the summit camp.
The Kilimanjaro Marangu Route has a low summit success rate of about 50% for the shorter 5-day itinerary that excludes the acclimatization day. The longer itinerary that takes 6 days including the extra day for acclimatization has a success rate of about 80%, which is impressive.
The best and most affordable price 5 or 6 day Kilimanjaro climbing via Marangu route ranges from $1,220 to $2,000 per climber; this price depends on accommodation services and the group size.
