Mount Kilimanjaro, often referred to as the "Roof of Africa," is the highest freestanding mountain on the continent. This majestic peak is a dormant stratovolcano located in Tanzania. Standing at an impressive 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, it beckons adventurers from around the world with its formidable beauty.
The Umbwe route is considered the hardest route on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is steep and challenging, gaining altitude very quickly. The rapid speed of the ascent makes acclimatization difficult. The Umbwe Route is steeper and shorter than the Machame Route. Once at the Barranco Hut you continue on with the other Machame hikers. The descent is down the Mweka trail. Since it is a very short and direct route, it is not recommended for people with little altitude experience.
The Umbwe route is the least travelled, shortest and steepest trail. Not all outfitters offer this trek. In the first two days, you will gain over 4,000' of elevation up to 13,000 at Barranco Camp.
