DAY 1: UMBWE GATE TO UMBWE CAVE

Kilimanjaro

We kick off at Umbwe Park Gate, where we sign in and start our trek. Our path winds its way through the lush rainforest alongside the Umbwe river. The first night's camp awaits at Umbwe Cave Camp, around 2,900m high.

DAY 2: UMBWE CAMP TO BARRANCO CAMP

We leave camp and venture beyond the forest. The striking Western Breach wall occasionally peeks through the afternoon mists as we approach the Great Barranco. Tonight, we'll make camp at Barranco.

DAY 3: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA

Our day begins with an exhilarating scramble up the Great Barranco Wall. We then traverse scree to the Karanga Valley, nestled beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. Our resting place for the night is Karanga campsite.

DAY 4: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

Leaving Karanga campsite, we head for the junction connecting with the Mweka descent Trail. Our ascent leads us to the Barafu Hut, marking the completion of the Southern Circuit. The view from here showcases the twin peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo.

DAY 5: BARAFU CAMP-SUMMIT-MWEKA

The day starts early at 23:30, with a quick tea and biscuits before our summit trek. We ascend between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers, moving northwest toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the journey. At Stella Point, we pause for a brief rest and witness a breathtaking sunrise, weather permitting. At Uhuru Peak, we reach Kilimanjaro's highest point and Africa's highest peak. We descend to Mweka Hut via Barafu.

DAY 6: MWEKA CAMP TO MOSHI

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, we descend to Mweka Park Gate to receive our summit certificates. Lower elevations may be damp and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are handy. Shorts and t-shirts are suitable, but keep rain gear and warmer clothing within reach.
