Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro

8-Days Lemosho Route kilimanjaro Climbing

Safari summary

The best itinerary for this route is the eight-day Lemosho route variation. The journey from Barranco to Barafu on the eight-day Lemosho route is divided into two days, allowing for a quick day right before the summit attempt. This is crucial since summit day starts very early around midnight leaving climbers exhausted for the hardest day of the climb. Climbers can benefit from a shorter day in advance by getting more sleep.
The majority of well-known Kilimanjaro companies follow the eight-day Lemosho route, which comes highly recommended as a newer route. It is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts on the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate which is a further drive from town, and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route.
After beautiful forests and moorlands, it crosses the Shira Plateau on day 3 to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. You may be lucky enough to see buffalo, elephant and other game. Because this route can be done over a longer period of time for acclimatization, it has a higher success rate of summit.

Itinerary

Lendrossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Kilimanjaro

Departing from Moshi a 3 hours’ drive will take you through welcoming mountainside villages to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. We will patiently wait for our permits to be issued while watching the hustle and bustle of operations as many crews prepare for the journey ahead Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and quite slippery.

Kilimanjaro Camping

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Kilimanjaro

After a good night sleep and a hearty breakfast at Mti Mkubwa Camp we emerge from the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, we leave the forest behind now, the trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. Temperatures begin to drop as we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is amazing.

Kilimanjaro Camping

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Kilimanjaro

We spend an entire day exploring the Shira plateau. A leisurely stroll eastwards to Kibo's glaciated summit, crosses the plateau, and arrives at Shira 2 camp situated along a stream in moor meadows. Next, we proceed to Moir Hut, a small, frequently visited location at the foot of Lent Hills. Lent Hills offers a wide range of treks, which makes it a great place to get acclimated. One of the world's tallest plateaus is Shira.

Kilimanjaro Camping

Shira 2 Camp-Lover Tower-Barranco

Kilimanjaro

We proceed eastward along a ridge from the Shira Plateau, going beyond the intersection and up towards Kibo's peak. As we proceed, we turn to the southeast in the direction of the Lava Tower, also known as the "Shark's Tooth." We reach the second junction, which leads to the 16,000-foot-high Arrow Glacier, not far from the tower. We now descend to an elevation of 13,000 feet, the Barranco Hut. Here, we relax, have dinner, and spend the night.

Kilimanjaro Camping

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, we continue on a steep ridge up to the adventurous Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction, which connects, with the Mweka Trail. This is one of the most impressive days to see the power, agility, and strength of your crew zip over this wall with what appears such ease. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Kilimanjaro Camping

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Barafu Camp to Summit -Mweka Camp

Kilimanjaro

The trek begins with an early start, focusing on mental and physical challenges. The journey continues to the summit between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, ascending through heavy scree and reaching Stella Point. The summit offers a magnificent sunrise, and the remaining 1-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak encounters snow. After celebrating, the descent to Mweka Camp begins, stopping at Barafu for lunch and rest. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for the terrain.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s time to say goodbye. We continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy and steep and we highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles. From the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (30 minutes). Enjoy a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations
