Safari summary
The Marangu route is the oldest and most popular route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also known as the "Coca-Cola" route because it is the easiest and most straightforward route to the summit. The route is well-maintained and has permanent huts at each campsite, which makes it a good choice for first-time climbers or those who are not as physically fit.
The 6-day Marangu route itinerary:
Day 1: Transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate and hike to Mandara Hut (1,700 m/5,600 ft).
Day 2: Hike to Horombo Hut (3,700 m/12,100 ft).
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Day 4: Hike to Kibo Hut (4,700 m/15,400 ft).
Day 5: Summit at night from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,341 ft) and descend to Horombo Hut.
Day 6: Descend to Marangu Gate and transfer back to Moshi.
The Challenges
The main challenge of the Marangu route is the altitude. The summit of Kilimanjaro is over 19,000 feet above sea level, and the body needs time to adjust to the altitude. This is why it is important to take acclimatization days at Horombo Hut.
The cost for the 6-day Marangu route is 1430 USD, which includes all operations on Mount Kilimanjaro.
