Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

The first day of the climb begins at Marangu Gate, which is located at an altitude of 1,800 m. From here, the trail winds through montane forest, where you may see monkeys, birds, and other wildlife. The hike to Mandara Hut is 8.3 kilometers long and takes about 4–5 hours.

On the second day, the trail continues through the montane forest and then ascends to the heathland zone. The hike to Horombo Hut is 12.5 kilometers (7.8 miles) long and takes about 6–8 hours.
