Safari summary

A 6-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Machame route is the most popular route on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and tallest free-standing mountain in the world at 5,895 meters above sea level.Machame route, also known as “Whiskey” route, has been nicknamed because it is often perceived as being tougher than Marangu route, which is often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route The Machame route is considered to have a moderate to challenging difficulty level; it involves steep ascents and descents as well as some rocky sections.Climbers should have a good level of fitness and endurance.

The Machame route has a relatively high success rate for reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is due to its longer duration, which allows for better acclimatization. Unlike the Marangu route, in which you sleep in huts, you will sleep in tents on this route, the Machame. However, all your equipment and supplies will be carried up the mountain by our porters, and delicious meals will be made for you each day by a skilled chef. Most climbers choose to use six days to climb (although an additional acclimatization day can be included on request). Acclimatization is the key to success with this mountain, and on this route we climb high to the lava tower (4,630m) on day three and then come back down by nearly 700m to overnight. This helps you to acclimate even better.

The affordable cost of a 6-day Machame route is $1430 per person for 6 days. This price usually includes expenses like park fees, permits, camping equipment, meals, and the services of experienced guides and porters who ensure a safe and successful climb

Itinerary

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Kilimanjaro

The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp

Our day starts by descending into the Great Barranco, We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical, but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley, which is our last stop for fresh water before the summit. Scree now forms the terrain as we walk through arid and desolate land towards Barafu camp. Distance covered: 8.5km / 5.3mi

Barafu camp

Kilimanjaro

Ascend at midnight, hike steeply to summit glaciers for 4-5 hours, gaining incredible height quickly. Spectacular views from the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m). Surrounding ice cliffs and vistas of jagged Mawenzi Peak are breathtaking. After another hour, reach Uhuru Peak (5895m). Descend via Stella Point, then scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast. Finally, head to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Mweka camp

After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi
