The Marangu route is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. However, the short time frame of the route makes altitude acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. Marangu is unfortunately less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. For that reason, it is also the most crowded route.It is also the only route that offers sleeping huts in a dormitory-style settlement in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo huts and 120 bunk beds at Horombo hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms.

Kilimanjaro Gate to mandara hut
After breakfast and an orientation, travel (45 minutes) to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate, register, and start the ascent. To reach the Mandara camp, through the rain forest. It is a good idea to take a side excursion to Maundi Crater to observe the area's surrounds, which includes northern Tanzania and Kenya. Look for Colombus monkeys, soaring Eucalyptus trees, and other wildlife in the rainforest.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After leaving the glades of the rainforest, you travel along a trail on the wide moorlands until you reach the Horombo camp. Breathtaking views can be seen from the top of Kibo and Mawenzi. Search for enormous groundsels and lobelias. You can start to experience the affects of the elevation.

As we continue to climb, we cross the final watering hole and enter the Kilimanjaro saddle between the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Upper heathland has the most vegetation, which disappears into the "moonscape" after that. Supper, rest, and summit climb preparation.

Kibo Hut to Summit to Horombo Hut
Begin the ascent to the summit very early in the morning on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman's point on the crater rim. Ascending further, we now reach Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point. Every turn offers breathtaking views. At the summit, you will have photos taken to show your friends and family. We descend from here, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before proceeding to the Horombo encampment.

Horombo Hut to Moshi
After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut. Continue descending through a lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plentiful to wear. A vehicle will meet you at Marangu Gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi.
