Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Kilimanjaro

We drive about 50 minutes from Arusha/Moshi to Machame Gate of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. The journey passes through the Machame villages on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. We now leave the Machame Gate and trek through the rainforest on a winding path that climbs a ridge. Further down the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are very important when climbing. We continue a short distance until we reach Camp Machame.

Machame Campsite

Day 2: Machame to Shira Cave Camps

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast we leave the rainforest clearings and continue on an uphill trail to Shira Cave Camp, crossing the small valley and hiking along a steep heather covered rocky ridge to the bottom of the ridge. The route now turns west into a river gorge. Upon arrival at camp, rest, dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.

Shira Cave Campsite

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower

Kilimanjaro

From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft.

Lava Tower Campsite

Day 4: Barranco to Karanga Camps

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast we leave Barranco Camp and continue up a steep ridge past the Barranco Wall to Karanga Valley Camp. This is a short acclimatization day.

Karanga Campsite

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, we leave Karanga Camp and reach the turnoff that leads to the Mweka Trail. Continue to Barafu Hut. At this point you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit of Uhuru Peak from many different angles. Here we camp, rest, have dinner and prepare for the summit day. From this position, the two peaks Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen.

Barafu Campsite

Day 6: Barafu Camp to UHURU PEAK

Kilimanjaro

You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit.

Mweka Campsite

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Moshi

Kilimanjaro

After breakfast we continue the descent to the gate of Mweka Park to receive your summit certificates. It can be wet and muddy at lower elevations. Leggings and trekking poles will help. shorts and t-shirts. it will probably be enough to wear (have rain gear and warmer clothes ready). Continue from the gate back to Moshi/Arusha.
