Safari summary

The sight of one hundred thousand wildebeest and zebras crossing the grassland savanna is something to behold and is surely one of Africa’s natural wonders. However no matter what time of year you decide to visit the wildlife watching is superb.

Every year the world’s greatest wildlife migration makes its chaotic, magnificent way across the Serengeti and Masai Mara plains. 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebra and a similar number of Thomson’s gazelles take part covering a round trip of around 300 miles each year. Lions, leopard, cheetah, hyenas and crocodiles are territorial creatures, lying in wait for the vast migrating herds to pass. Most spectacular of these encounters is with the massive crocodiles of the Grumeti river. The herds approach the river, stop and turn, then surge back before leaping into the waters. Frenzied crocodiles launch themselves into the herds but most survive through weight of numbers.
