Safari summary

As a newer route, it is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts on the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate which is a further drive from town, and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route.

After beautiful forests and moorlands it crosses the Shira Plateau on day 3 to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. You may be lucky enough to see buffalo, elephant and other game. Because this route can be done over a longer period of time for acclimatization, it has a higher success rate of summit.

Itinerary

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Start with a drive to Londorossi Gate (2,100m) for registration and briefing. After a short drive to the trailhead, begin your trek through lush rainforest, home to monkeys, birds, and exotic plants. After 3–4 hours, arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m), where you’ll enjoy your first dinner and overnight on the mountain.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

The trail ascends through the last stretch of forest, then enters the heath and moorland zone, offering the first views of Kibo Peak. The 5–6 hour hike continues across open hills and valleys before reaching Shira 1 Camp (3,610m) on a high plateau. Relax here with wide views of the plains far below.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Continue across the Shira Plateau with gentle climbs and incredible mountain scenery. You’ll pass unusual alpine plants and look out for wildlife. After 3–4 hours, arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), where you’ll spend the night. This day aids acclimatization and offers views of Mawenzi Peak and Mount Meru.

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

Climb steadily towards the famous Lava Tower (4,630m), where you’ll stop for lunch and acclimatization. Then descend to Barranco Camp (3,976m), enjoying dramatic views along the way. This 6–8 hour trek follows the important “climb high, sleep low” method for altitude adjustment.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day starts with a fun scramble up the Barranco Wall, offering breathtaking panoramas. From there, the trail weaves through rocky slopes and alpine desert, leading to Karanga Camp (4,035m) after 4–5 hours. Rest, enjoy the scenery, and soak in the crisp mountain air.

Overnight: Karanga Camp

Acclimatization Day at Karanga Camp

This extra day is perfect for rest and acclimatization. You’ll take a short, scenic hike above Karanga Camp to higher altitudes before returning to camp for lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for the final stages of the climb. This helps improve your chances of a safe, successful summit.

Overnight: Karanga Camp

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, hike for 3–4 hours to Barafu Camp (4,673m). The trail passes through barren alpine desert, with incredible views of Kibo Peak ahead. Once at Barafu, rest, have an early dinner, and prepare your gear for the summit attempt, which starts at midnight.

Overnight: Barafu Camp

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak

Wake at midnight for the summit push, climbing steep switchbacks under the stars to Stella Point (5,756m), then onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — Africa’s highest point. After celebrating, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Gate (1,640m) via Mweka Camp. The long but rewarding day takes 12–14 hours. At the gate, receive your climbing certificate and head back to your hotel.

Overnight: Salinelo Hotel
