Safari summary
As a newer route, it is more remote and arguably more beautiful, but a bit longer and slightly more expensive. It starts on the Western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate which is a further drive from town, and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route.
After beautiful forests and moorlands it crosses the Shira Plateau on day 3 to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. You may be lucky enough to see buffalo, elephant and other game. Because this route can be done over a longer period of time for acclimatization, it has a higher success rate of summit.
Duration: 7 – 8 days

Itinerary
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After a morning drive to Londorossi Gate (2,100m), you’ll complete registration and continue to the trailhead. The first hike takes you through thick rainforest, alive with monkeys, birds, and colorful plants. After 3–4 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m), also known as Big Tree Camp, where you’ll have dinner and settle in for your first night under the stars.
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Today, the trail leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone. The scenery opens up to reveal sweeping hills, giant heathers, and the first clear views of Kibo Peak. The hike takes about 5–6 hours, gradually climbing to Shira 1 Camp (3,610m), located on a wide plateau with spectacular mountain views. Enjoy a warm meal as the sun sets over the African plains below.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
After breakfast, you’ll continue across the Shira Plateau. This easy, scenic hike offers beautiful views of Mawenzi Peak and the rolling plains far below. You’ll cross open moorland dotted with unique alpine plants. After 3–4 hours, you’ll reach Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), where you’ll spend the night. This extra day here helps with acclimatization, preparing your body for the higher altitudes ahead.
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
This is a key acclimatization day. Hike gradually to the famous Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, where you’ll experience higher altitude before descending to Barranco Camp (3,976m). The descent follows the “climb high, sleep low” strategy, helping your body adjust. After a 6–8 hour trek, relax beneath the towering Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic features.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start the day climbing the Barranco Wall, a fun and slightly challenging scramble with breathtaking views. From the top, the trail winds through rocky hills and alpine desert, leading to Karanga Camp (4,035m) after 4–5 hours of hiking. This shorter day allows extra rest and acclimatization as you prepare for the summit push.
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, continue climbing toward Barafu Camp (4,673m), the base camp for your summit attempt. The landscape is dry and barren, with impressive views of Kibo Peak ahead. After 3–4 hours, you’ll reach camp in time to rest, eat an early dinner, and sleep before the final climb. Prepare your gear for a midnight summit start.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
At midnight, begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) under a starlit sky. Reach Stella Point (5,756m) by sunrise, then continue to the summit — the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebrations, descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest. Continue down to Mweka Gate (1,640m), passing through Mweka Camp and lush rainforest. The full day takes about 12–14 hours. At the gate, collect your climbing certificate and celebrate before transferring back to your hotel.
Overnight: Salinelo Hotel
