Day one : Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
The trek begins after a short drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where registration and necessary formalities are completed. The trail starts with a gradual ascent through lush rainforest, offering a chance to spot blue monkeys and rich flora. As you approach the upper edge of the forest, the trail opens up, revealing beautiful hillsides. The day's hike covers 8 km, taking 4-5 hours to reach Mandara Hut at 8,858 feet, where you'll stay overnight, enjoying the serene atmosphere of the rainforest.
Day two : Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, the journey continues with a steep climb through the last stretches of forest, emerging into the open moorland zone. This day's trek covers 12 km and takes 6-8 hours, providing the first panoramic views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks if the weather is clear. The landscape changes dramatically, with giant heathers and unique vegetation dotting the path. Day Three : Acclimatization Day – Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Hut to Horombo Hut
This extra day is crucial for acclimatization, enhancing your chances of a successful summit. A day hike to Mawenzi Hut and back, covering 10 km, offers stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks and takes 3-5 hours. This day provides a closer look at Kilimanjaro’s striking landscapes, with the heath zone revealing its unique flora and geology. Returning to Horombo Hut for the night allows your body to adjust to the altitude.
Day Four : Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today’s trek involves crossing the lunar landscape of the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo, a desolate stretch of Alpine desert. The trail is 10 km long and takes 6-8 hours to reach Kibo Hut, located at 15,430 feet at the base of Kibo’s crater wall. The scenery is stark yet beautiful, with wide-open spaces and a sense of isolation. Upon arrival, you’ll have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the summit push.
Day five : Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
The summit attempt begins at midnight, as you embark on the most challenging part of the trek. The trail to Gilman’s Point is steep and requires a slow, steady pace. After reaching Gilman’s Point, you traverse the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,341 feet. The total distance for the day is 22 km, with 10-13 hours of trekking. After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Horombo Hut, where you can rest and reflect on your achievement.
Final day: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
The final day involves a 20 km descent, taking 5-7 hours through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate. The downhill trek is easier but still requires careful footing. At the park headquarters, you will receive your well-deserved summit certificate. A vehicle will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure with Kizza Adventures.
