There are six established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro – Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all approach from the south of the mountain. The Lemosho and Shira routes approach from the west. The Rongai route approaches from the north. All routes except Marangu and Rongai descend via Mweka route.

This route is the steepest with the shortest and most direct routes to the Southern Glaciers, Western Breach and Uhuru Peak. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on Kilimanjaro. However it is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful. Very steep route best suited to experienced trekkers.

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Begin the trek at Umbwe Gate after a drive from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Register at the gate and start hiking through dense rainforest. Ascend steeply through the forest, gaining elevation quickly. Arrive at Umbwe Camp, located at approximately 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level. Approximate trekking time: 4-6 hours.

Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Leave Umbwe Camp early in the morning after breakfast. Trek through the heather and moorland zones, with occasional steep sections. Reach the Barranco Valley, known for its stunning views of the Barranco Wall. Ascend the Barranco Wall, a challenging but exhilarating climb. Arrive at Barranco Camp, situated at around 3,950 meters (12,960 feet). Approximate trekking time: 5-7 hours.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start the day with a descent into the Karanga Valley. Traverse across rocky terrain and ascend gradually towards Karanga Camp. Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the glaciers. Arrive at Karanga Camp, located at approximately 4,040 meters (13,255 feet). Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing. Approximate trekking time: 4-5 hours.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Begin the ascent to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit. Trek through the alpine desert landscape, following a rocky and steep path. Reach Barafu Camp, situated at approximately 4,600 meters (15,092 feet). Rest and prepare for the summit attempt, which usually begins in the early hours of the next morning. Approximate trekking time: 3-4 hours.

Summit Day - Barafu Camp to Uhuru
Start the summit attempt around midnight to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Ascend through the darkness, following the switchbacks on the steep scree slope. Reach Stella Point (5,685 meters/18,651 feet), the crater rim. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal. descending to Mweka Camp, located at around 3,100 meters (10,170 feet). Approximate trekking time: 12-16 hours (ascent and descent).

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend through the lush rainforest, enjoying the sights and sounds of the lower slopes. Arrive at Mweka Gate, where you'll sign out and collect your summit certificates. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest. Celebrate your Kilimanjaro summit achievement! Approximate trekking time: 3-4 hours.
