You’ll continue your safari onto the Ol Pejeta conservancy where you can see rhino, track lions and experience a night game drive. The safari will then head to the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha for a boat safari before heading to the Savannah plains of the Masai Mara to track down all the Big Five.

Day 1 - The Aberdares, The Ark

Depart Nairobi for the Aberdares (3 hours), a park set in a mountain range with great views of Mount Kenya. There are many waterfalls and mist covered, lichen hung trees and you may see mountain elephant, black rhino and leopards here, as well as long haired colobus monkeys and the mountain bongo if you are lucky. You will arrive at the Aberdares Country Club for lunch after which you will be transferred to The Ark - a game-viewing lodge, where you will stay for a night. The Ark offers a unique game viewing experience from the comfort of the lodge, with four viewing decks and a hide. Before dinner, the host gives an interactive talk about the local fauna and animals and dinner is served from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. Then continue to watch the wildlife and if you do want to go to bed, during the night the resident ranger stays on watch and will buzz your room if an interesting animal comes to the water hole!

Day 2 & 3 - Samburu, Intrepids

After breakfast, you’ll leave The Ark and the Aberdares and continue on to Samburu (3.5 hours) a very scenic but lesser known reserve, which is a semi-arid area situated along the Uaso Nyiro River that attracts wildlife in from the surrounding savannah plains.  Samburu is rich in wildlife with its rare Northern species; including the gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich and is also home to a number of large predators including cheetah, lion and leopard. You can also find 450 different species of bird here, including the Lesser Kestrel and the Taita Falcon.  You’ll arrive in time for lunch at Intrepids Camp, set on the banks of the great Uaso Nyiro River. Each luxury tent sits on a raised wooden deck overlooking the river where the elephants sometimes make an appearance or the crocodiles come out to lounge by the river banks. Each tent has an en suite and also a verandah with views across the river. The restaurant also overlooks the river and serves a high standard of food from its’ a la carte menu. After lunch you'll head out on a game drive and then spend the next day exploring the reserve.

Day 4 & 5 - Ol Pejeta, Sweetwaters Tented Camp

After breakfast, you’ll depart Samburu and continue your journey onto Laikipia (3.5 hours) and the Ol Pejeta conservancy, that carries out important work to conserve wildlife and generate income through wildlife tourism for re-investment in conservation projects and the local communities. Ol Pejeta is located on a vast plateau and has the highest density of large mammals in Kenya; including unusual species such as the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and the Lelwel hartebeest, there are also seven rhino sanctuaries here and you may be lucky enough to see the now rare black rhino. You’ll spend two nights at the stunning, luxury Sweetwaters tented camp, which is set on the foothills of Mount Kenya and has amazing views across to the Aberdares and to Mount Kenya. There is a watering hole that attracts in wildlife and there is also a nearby river where you can enjoy scenic birding walks, making Sweetwaters a really wonderful place to stay. You’ll spend your time here on game drives during the day and night, lion tracking, where you can participate in  gathering research information needed to monitor the collared lions. It is a great way to learn about lions and all of the information gathered is passed on to the Ol Pejeta Ecological Monitoring Department. When you’re not on game drives or tracking lions you can just relax in camp and watch the wildlife at the camp’s watering hole!

Day 6 - Lake Naivasha, Sopa Resort

After breakfast, you’ll leave Sweet Waters for a short game drive before heading to the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha, arriving in time for lunch at the Sopa Resort. The lodge is located close to the lake shore and has beautiful gardens and there is often wildlife wandering around such as bushbuck, zebra and giraffe. The lodge has a restaurant and very nice lounge and bar area with leather sofas and fire places for the cool Naivasha evenings. The rooms are spacious, Swahili style chalets either with a balcony or a glass fronted lounge area for relaxing and wildlife viewing. After lunch you’ll head out on a boat safari across the lake where you may see hippos and many species of birds including fish eagles and pelicans. Towards the end of your boat safari you will stop off at Crescent Island for a guided nature walk.  You’ll retire to the lodge for the evening, have dinner and watch the hippos come up from the Lake to graze in Sopa’s grounds.

Day 7, 8 & 9 - Masai Mara, Ilkeliani

After an early breakfast, you’ll leave Naivasha and travel to the open grassland of the Masai Mara (4.5 hours). Rich in biodiversity and home to a large variety of bird species and wildlife, this savannah reserve offers great game viewing and bird watching opportunities. The Masai Mara is regarded as the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife reserves and is home to the annual wildebeest migration, which involves over 1.5 million animals!  There have been 95 species of mammals, amphibians and reptiles, and over 400 bird species recorded on the reserve. Nowhere in Africa is wildlife more abundant, and the visitor will rarely miss seeing the Big Five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino).  Arriving in time for lunch at Ilkeliani on the Talek river, a favourite area for elephants to come and drink. The camp combines traditional safari style with a modern contemporary feel and been designed  along ecofriendly principles to leave a minimum foot print. There are just 17 tents with wonderful views of the plains and wildlife, each tent is stylish with an en suite bathroom, a spacious interior and front verandah with a day bed and canvas safari chairs. After lunch you’ll head out for a game drive and then spend the next two days exploring the savannah grasslands of the Masai Mara tracking down the Big Five, along with the many other species of plains mammals, reptiles and birds.
