“Go during the migration - it is such a highlight!” - Nomadmoo

Amazing diversity, but crowded

The Masai Mara is truly an amazing place for the abundance of wildlife that it hosts. You can travel to other parks in Kenya to see particular species; however if you want to experience everything all in one place, then the Mara is a sure bet. The open savannahs make for breath-taking views, excellent visibility for seeing wildlife, and you really feel as though you are getting the African safari experience. Most of the camps in the Mara have been operating for quite some time, and they really know how to cater to westerners - the food and accommodation are typically excellent, and the leisure activities are well-planned and hassle-free. I would certainly recommend going to the Mara during the wildebeest migration, as this is a once in a lifetime kind of experience. On the downside, because the Mara offers so much, it tends to be crowded...particularly during the migration. You will get to see all the variety of wildlife; however, chances are that there will be many other tourist vehicles around viewing the same animal at the same time. In this case, I would pair a trip to the Mara with a trip to one of Kenya or Tanzania's smaller parks in order to get a more intimate experience.
