“Masai village visits, hot air balloon ride, game drives, wildebeest crossing the Mara River” - Kristine V

Masai Mara--One of our planet's treasures.

Masai Mara is truly a must-see destination with stunning scenery, abundant and varied wildlife, and an incredible sense of authenticity thanks to the Masai involvement. We highly recommend taking a balloon safari (we used Balloon Safaris Ltd.) as it was a highlight of our trip. Our Australian pilot spotted a huge male lion and a family of five cheetah among the herds of zebra and wildebeest. The entire experience was almost surreal. We saw all of the big five--6 cheetah (one on a kill), 5 lions, 1 huge male leopard sleeping in a tree, 3 black rhino, and hundreds of buffalo and elephants.

Also, we expected the park to be busy, but because of its size, we were often alone on a road--we were only one of two cars watching a family of rare black rhino for 20 minutes.

We stayed just outside of the reserve in the AA Lodge, which we probably would not chose on our next adventure because it seemed like most of the lodge was Made in China and it lacked the African vibe. The staff at the lodge are incredibly gracious and helpful (mostly Masai), but the general feel of the place was not quite what we expected.
