“Pack the sunscreen for the afternoon game cruises, the sun is brutal!” - Laurapattara

Sensational reserve, excellent viewing and the best sunsets in Africa

The Chobe is a phenomenal park and home to an abundance of wildlife, all of which can be admired on late afternoon game drives and sunset barge sailing along its rivers. The first and only place in Botswana where we spotted crocodiles, the Chobe is home to zebras, lots of different gazelles, elephants, warthogs and hippos.

During a sunset cruise we were privy to a ferocious domestic dispute between two ginormous hippos. Crikey were they scary! Seeing those big, lardy beasts in full attack mode wiped away any notions we may have harboured about them being slow, lazy and pacifist. Our local guide proceeded to tell us that more people die at the jaws of hippos than any other animal in Africa and that they are among the most aggressive and territorial animal on four legs. Wow...watch them fight and you’ll never argue with that!

The best thing about Chobe is that it’s in Botswana! Leaving the camp at 5am was a sure fire way of spotting herds of elephants moving about. Unbelievable...the only place where I could pretty much guarantee a morning elephant spotting session from the road. Botswana for me is all about colours, and the best sunsets cherished were right here, from the comfort of our game drive truck.

If you’re looking for a special splurge when in Chobe, don’t look past Ngoma Safari Lodge. Unfortunately, I was guiding a camping tour so never actually stayed here, but this is where I’d take my group for luxury sundowners, right before I took them back to the comfort of our very basic camp ground. ah! This place is just gorgeous, the setting ideal and I do think spending a few nights here would be just tops. Next time, I’m coming back to Africa to guide 5* tours instead!!
