Have You ever been to the Land of a Million Hills? The Kigezi region with its numerous lakes, panoramic views, and countless terrace farms, is a unique travel destination in Uganda for ambitious travelers. With lakes Mulehe, Mutanda, and Bunyonyi in harmony with the many hills of the mountaineous area and the countless cultivated fields on their slopes, the Kigezi region offers incredible diversity of many kinds. On our trip, we will be able to trek the rare and critically endangered mountain gorillas. On top of this experience, we took much time with the local people to design a tour which would not only introduce you to the gentle giants and other wildlife. We want you to also meet and experience the local culture of today and the cultural heritage of the region, including traditions and languages. Everyone who joins us on this journey will spend time in one of the world’s most exciting environments. At the same time, you will support the region – by learning about it!

Day 1: After we pick you at Kanombe International Airport in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city, we will directly move to Uganda. Reaching our destination of the day will not take very long and soon we will find ourselves on the shore of lake Bunyonyi, Africa’s second deepest lake after lake Malawi. We will spend the night on one of the islands of lake Bunyonyi.

Day 2: After we get up in the morning and maybe jump into the lake which is free of bilharzia and covered in fogs in the mornings, we embark on a canoe trip on the volcano lake. Led by a member of the local community, we will discover the different islands of lake Bunyonyi and learn about this place’s history. In the afternoon, we move to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and get a first glimpse of the rain forest, home of more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Soon after arriving at our lodge, we will be given the chance to meet the Batwa community and in the evening hours, we will attend their show of ancient cultural dances.

Day 3: In the morning, we start our ascent to the tops of the Kigezi hills for fascinating scenic views of the Virunga Massif in the south, the Western Rift Valley, lake Mutanda and lake Mulehe! Our hike up this trail leads through the community settlement and we will get a good picture at how life is in this part of Uganda for most people. In the evening, we will be entertained by authentic Bakiiga cultural performers and learn about the local dances and plays, but also see dances from other Ugandan tribes.

Day 4: Today trekking the critically endangered mountain gorillas in southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Gorilla trekking can be very exhausting. Therefore, no other activities are planned for this day and after trekking the great apes, we will share the experiences at your hotel.

Day 5: We will travel to Kisoro town and Mgahinga National Park in order to climb the massive volcanoes. On top of Mt. Muhavura, we will enjoy a great view and we will find a gorgeous crater lake. Will you dare to swim in its ice cold water? After the hike, We will take you to our lodge at the foot of Mt. Muhavura.

Day 6: We are leaving early to travel to Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, to meet Your flight schedule on that day. Alternatively we can arrange for going back to Kigali, giving us a whole day city experience in one of East Africa’s rising cities before your flight goes.
