Having run luxury safari lodges in extremely remote regions of Africa, their greatest beauty is in being far from the madding crowd, whilst privilege to expert, passionate guides who can elevate your experience to a different category entirely. But so often, in the race for one upmanship, lodges lose their USP, fussing over whether you have a hairdryer in the room, and shutting guests off from the bush they have come to visit with the hum of air-conditioning behind closed doors. Its a fine balance! Having married my own safari guide I am lucky enough to now be able to enjoy seeking the "back to basics" camp - raw africa as it used to be. Electric fence free. Though I'd never forego the chance of fine dining and feather pillows given half the chance!
