I visited in July 2015
Samburu was such a memorable part of our 15 day Kenya/Uganda safari because of its remote location, lack of other tourists, authentic feel due to the proximity of the Samburu tribes, and access to wildlife. We stayed 2 nights, but should have stayed another one or two nights to maximize the experience.
We loved seeing the special animals that do not live in the other parks like the reticulated giraffe (my favorite due to its beautiful pattern), Grevy Zebra, and Oryx. We did not see the Somali Ostrich, but many live in the park.

The name Samburu is of Masai origin, a ‘samburr’ is a traditional leather bag the Masai use for carrying honey and milk. This region is characterized by vast, open landscapes, dried riverbeds (depending on the season of the year) and its red volcanic soil.
Rock outcroppings contrast against the dense woodland vegetation along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River,...
I prefer active and engaging trips where you come out of a trip with a sense of being part of the area you visit. Visiting local homesteads, trying their cuisine, hiking and local activities like schools.

There is no place I love visiting like the Northern reserves. They offer some of the best scenery and wildlife. Seeing the leopard sleeping on a rock with the sunset at the background was the best sunsets I have ever taken in a long while.
The weather in this area makes it a all year round place to visit.
Cindi started her travel in Africa first with viewing the Great White sharks in cages near Cape Town, as an avid diver and adventurer. Then spent 3 weeks driving in Southern Africa to see the countries, the game reserves and to discover the people of Africa. Since th...

Samburu National Reserve is located near the Ewaso Ng'iro River in Kenya. There is a wide variety of animals known as "The Samburu special five" which are: Grevy's zebra, ostrich, reticulated giraffe, generuk and beisa oryx.
Let's not forget there are over 350 species of birds here, too. You can also find other animals in the reserve such as the olive baboon, war...

As I mentioned in my last review of the trip to Buffalo Springs National Reserve, the Samburu National Reserve is just next to it as they are divided by River Ewaso Nyiro, which means brown water, making these reserves sisters. In Samburu National Reserve my friends and I could not believe all the wonders that were associated with this place. It is the very place w...
